Hager, Robert S.
Robert Sherwood Hager, 81, of Cromwell, CT, died peacefully on February 11, 2014. Bob was born March 16, 1932 in Lansdowne, PA, son of the late John G. and Frances (Russell) Hager. The family moved around the East Coast for his father's job with General Motors
' Chevrolet Division, until 1941 when they moved to Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
Bob graduated from Calvin Coolidge High School in Washington, DC. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1954 with a B.S. in Accounting from the Wharton School of Business. He received his MBA from Syracuse University in 1961.
Throughout his life, Bob loved teaching and taught undergraduate and graduate level accounting and financial management at Syracuse University, University of Buffalo (SUNY), University of Hartford, Central Connecticut State University, University of Connecticut (Hartford, Storrs and Stamford), and at the Hartford Graduate Center. While teaching was his greatest joy, he was employed full time in accounting and financial management, where he loved to solve long-term, complex financial comptrollership problems: he worked at General Electric (Syracuse, NY), Strassenburg Laboratories (Rochester, NY), Bristol Myers International (NYC), Marine Midland Banks (Buffalo, NY), Loctite Corp. (Newington, CT), Scovill Manufacturing (Waterbury, CT), and Horberg Industries (Bridgeport, CT).
Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army
during the Korean War
, and continued to serve many years in the Army Reserves, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hartford, CT since 1977, where he sang in the choir and served as an elder, deacon and treasurer.
After he retired, Bob volunteered as a mentor with Senior Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) where he counseled individuals starting businesses.
Bob is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jean Sparklin Hager, and by his children to whom he was a wonderful father: Elizabeth Lord (David) of Woodbridge, VA; Virginia Russell Hager of Wilmington, NC; and Barbara Gail Hager of Bridgeport, CT. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, whom he loved dearly and to whom he was always happy to offer guidance on work, career and life: Brandon Lord (Renee), Bruce Lord, Amanda Lord, and Joshua Neiburger.
The family is very grateful to all the wonderful staff at Pilgrim Manor at Covenant Village of Cromwell, for their tender care of Bob during his last years.
A memorial service for Bob will be held at the Chapel of Covenant Village of Cromwell, 52 Missionary Rd., Cromwell, on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 11:00AM. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Benevolent Care Fund, Covenant Village, 52 Missionary Rd., Cromwell, CT 06416 or to First Presbyterian Church, 136 Capitol Ave., Hartford, CT 06106.
