WWII USMC Medical Corpsman Thomas Anthony Viscount of Milford Dies
Thomas Anthony Viscount, 88, died on Nov 5, in Jupiter Medical Hospital , Fla from complicated surgical illnesses. He is the son of his deceased parents, Joseph P. and Catherine Ruffo Viscount and a deceased Brother, Robert R.Viscount, all of Milford. He is survived by a brother, Joseph Viscount Jr. Lt Col USAF (Ret) ,a sister-in-law, Grace D. Viscount formerly of Brewood, England, eight nephews and one niece . He was a 1943 graduate of Milford High School and enlisted in the USMC on Sept 29, 1943. He served in the Central Pacific Theatre, in the 2nd USMC Division as a combat medical corpsman in the island campaigns of Saipan, Tinian, Iwo Jima and Okinowa from 1943 -1946. After the Japanese Surrender in WWII, he aided the Nagasaki, Japan survivors of the Atomic Bombing of that city in August, 1945. He was Honorably Discharged from the Armed Forces in April, 1946 and started a home construction company in Milford with his brother. He used his GI Education Bill benefits to attend New Haven State Teachers' College, earned a BA Degree from Fairfield University and a MS Degree from the University of Bridgeport. He was a 6th grade teacher from 1962 - 1982 at Pumpkin Delight Elementary School in Milford, providing formative education for thousands of students in that community. His life long interests included boating, sailing and water and snow skiing. He lived in North Palm Beach, Fla for the past ten years.
A Memorial Funeral will be held at St Gabriel Church, 26 Broadway, Milford at 4:00PM, Wednesday, 20 Nov with a Celebration Gathering at Sante's Aldarios' Restaurant following the Mass at 5:15 for friends and relatives. Donations to St Jude's Children Hospital and the Catholic Charities Fund, in lieu of flowers, were his wishes. His ashes will be buried along side his Mother grave site in St Michael's Cemetery in Stratford in a private family gathering on Monday, 25 Nov 2013.
