Virginia M. Croffy, age 88. of Westport Ct, passed away after a long illness on Tuesday February 19, 2013 while staying with her daughter Gail Griffiths of Melbourne Fla. She was born and raised in Jersey City, NJ. She moved to Westport in 1963. She was the daughter of the late William and Mary Bender of NJ. She was predeceased by her husband John A. Croffy , He was the former Dean of Students, Vice President, and one of the founders of Sacred Heart University. Mrs. Croffy, after raising 5 children, returned to college to finish her education.. She received her Bachelors Degree in accounting and Masters in Business Administration from Sacred Heart University. She was the Controller of the United Way of Stamford when she retired in 1990. She is Survived by her 5 Children, John A. Croffy Jr. and his wife Theresa of Fairfield, Dr. Bruce R. Croffy of North Carolina, Anne (Croffy) Stocking and husband Dale of Calf. Gail (Croffy) Griffiths and her husband William of Fla., and Linus Croffy and wife Marianne of Milford. She was a loving grandmother to Jennifer, Jaime, Danielle, Alessandra, William, Kathleen, Sean, Dana, Casie and Jonathan . She was Great Grandmother (GG) to 6 children Stephanie, Tori, Austin, Ashley, Zackary, Jackson and Marley. She is also survived by a sister Clair McCarthy of Pa. and numerous nieces and nephews. Virginia was a member of Assumption Catholic Church of Westport and was a member of The Catholic Daughters. Virginia's loves beside her husband and family were Gourmet cooking, crocheting, sewing, quilting, knitting, gardening and travel but most of all entertaining family and friends. She hosted many large dinner parties for the faculty and students of Sacred Heart University at her home in Westport. She will be in turned with her beloved husband John in the Military Cemetery in Middletown, Ct. A Memorial Mass is planned for May at Assumption Church in Westport. In Lieu of Flowers, those who so desire my make a donation in her memory to the John A. Croffy Outstanding Student Athlete Award fund at Sacred Heart University, Fairfield Ct.
