Noel Edwards Obituary

EDWARDS Noel Kavanaugh Edwards, age 74 of Redding and Bethel, passed away suddenly Friday, March 19, 2010. Born in Bridgeport, the son of the late Noel C. and Ethel Edwards, he was a longtime resident of Redding. A student at the University School in Bridgeport, he received a BA in Sociology ('58) from West Virginia Wesleyan College. Mr. Edwards was a retired science teacher at John Read Middle School in Redding where he became known for exhibits of wildlife (including birds, snakes, insects, and small mammals) in his classroom and at home that conveyed to his students an understanding of such life that no media could provide. A talented artist, he painted at Poverty Hollow Studio in Redding Ridge, exhibiting for many years in area art shows, and was the recipient of several significant regional awards. He was the owner of Consignart of Bethel, dealing in art and antiques. During the spring/summer of 1962, he took a position as Warden at the Corkscrew Swamp Audubon Sanctuary in Naples, Fla., and he served for many years on the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Audubon Society. Later, he was involved in the efforts of the Redding Land Trust to preserve open space in the town of Redding. He was an avid naturalist, a former nature cinematographer, and a member of the Linnaean Society of New York. Survivors include his beloved companion, Donna Frassetto of Bethel; cousins, Jane Downs of Fairfield, Rev. Perry Downs (and Sandy) of Illinois, George "Jock" Anderson (and Diane) of Freeland, Md., Toni Rogers (and Dick) of Newtown, Jamene Farrell of West Haven, and Daniel Medvey of Stratford; and two treasured dogs, Boomer and Lola. A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Edwards may be made to the Redding Land Trust (P.O. Box 76, Redding, CT 06875) or the Marcus Cardiac Rehabilitation Program c/o the Danbury Hospital Development Fund (24 Hospital Ave., Danbury, CT 06810). Noel was my 7th grade science teacher circa 1981. many great memories...and many of getting in trouble. he was a quiet and peaceful man...no idea how he survived pre-hormonal kids. I wish that I could have known him as an adult.

I didn't know Joel but just saw a clip of him on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1982. He identified himself as Joel Edwards, a school teacher from Redding Ct. I hope his family and friends enjoy seeing this picture. The video was posted today 5/4/21 on Tictok. by @veryfunnyclips. RIP Noel Edwards

Noel and I had a lot in common. We both love bird watching, canoeing and land preservation. I admired his talents and sensitivity to nature. This Saturday we will watch the returning songbirds as they look for nesting sites. Noel will be with us. My deepest sympathy to Donna, my good friend for so many years.

Donna and the Edwards Family:
Our thoughts and deepest sympathy are with you all. We had the pleasure of first meeting Noel at one of our family holiday get-togethers.
We took an instant liking to Noel with his wit and sense of humor. It was easy to see that he and Donna were wonderful together. We were looking forward to seeing Donna and Noel soon.

Donna may you take some comfort in remembering your life together and how much you loved one another. He will be missed by us and remembered fondly.

I would like to propose a memorial hike with Noel's spirit, across the street from John Read Middle school.
My thought was to do this on the anniversary of his passing, but I personally have a need to go to that place where he taught me the things that most mattered to me. If anyone would be interested in joining me, please contact me, and we can find a day and time that most will be able to participate. Many trees have grown, and our mentor has passed, but I know we will hear his voice in that place we got to know him so well. I would also like to be able to do this, March 19th, 2011.

Noel, we talked of many things over the years. Wood, engines, art, the best tag sales, barns, small business, and science. I always knew that if I needed an opinion, you'd have one at the ready, regardless of subject!
Sympathies to all - and let us know when the memorial takes place.

April 1, 2010

About a month ago, I left a voice-mail on Mr.Edwards' answering machine (or at least what I thought was his answering machine) I wanted to get together with him. To let him know what I have been up to, and hear of his travels.
This man, gave me the ability to believe in myself as a scientist. I was a truly bored student until I met the likes of Mr. Edwards. Suddenly, I had found a knowledgeable friend, who would whistle like the birds and bring them in close. His anhydrous humor, always made me laugh even when the other students found him corny.
We were both outcasts. He never ate with the teachers, in their smoky lounge and the cafeteria was a place where I would lose my appetite, at the treatment I received from the other students, and we started having our lunch together, when I was a sixth grader at John Read Middle School.
I would wolf down my lunch, and Mr.Edwards would let me do whatever experiments I wanted to do.
I destructively distilled wood, and discussed many of my wacky inventions with him. I had proposed a hybrid car concept that he had a hard time grasping. Funny, it was similar to the cars like the Prius, today.
Most importantly, he taught me to not be my own worst enemy.
I wanted to tell you Mr. Edwards, that it was you, that was the single most important influence on me, of any teacher. Because of you, I was able to have other teachers on my side. It stopped being me vs. them, and it became just all of us. Learning and teaching together.
You let me, be me. Because of you I did not hate school anymore, and I wanted to know more. One day I did not eat, because I had an experiment I wanted to do, and you asked me why I was not hungry. I told you, that it was knowledge that I was hungry for.

I went on to get my degrees in Chemistry, and Biophysics. B.S., M.S., Ph.D. and post-doc.

I was labeled, Mr.Edwards, no one understood me, but you did.
You took the label off me, and let me be.
I wanted to thank you.
I wish that I had, It would have been good for your heart to hear it.

I am sad, for the world is a lesser place, without you in it.
I will never forget you.
Your spirit will live on in the students that I have and continue to influence, in your tradition.

I am honored to be able to say, that you were my friend.

So long, old chum.
Thank you for everything.

Ron & Robin Brown, friends from years gone by, would like to express our sympathy to Donna, and to Noel's extended family and friends. We enjoyed many good times with Noel years ago; before our grown children were born and while they were very young. Ron and Noel enjoyed doing some falconry and hawking together. Then there was the saw mill they owned together for a few years (before we moved to Brazil) which brought them both enjoyment. I enjoyed working with Noel at JRMS for a number of years (after Brazil). Through the years we spent many hours discusing spiritual matters. We always enjoyed seeing him around town. He will be missed.

Few teachers make a life long impact on you and Noel was one of them. I fondly remember him saying class put your books away today we are going for a walk to falls hole where he would identifying plants and songs of the birds. A great neighbor and mentored to me in my youth. Noel singed me up to volunteer at the Audubon Society which gave me a life long love of nature.

Dear Donna
I was heartbroken to hear of Noel's passing. I will be sad not to see him out in the yard watching the birds, or stopping over to share a bit of knowledge about the animals that live in our neighborhood. I will miss his noisy little car and the effort he made to plow our driveway that is always filled with cars. I will miss seeing him at our tag sales and his sense of humor. He was an animal lover like me and I loved that about him. RIP Noel you will be greatly missed, I wish I had more time to get to know you better. Every time that fox shrieks you can be sure you will be the first person on my mind. With my deepest sympathy.

I had the pleasure of knowing Noel in a difficult time in my life. He let me work in the store for a couple months. He always had time to share.
He also gave me some art lessons, and I could always count on seeing him at a local tag sale. A good man. A pleasure to know. Thanks Noel!

Although we never met face to face, we developed a warm and caring relationship over many telephone conversations. I will miss his humor, his expansive interests that he shared with me, his kidding me about my crow. I miss him. My heart goes out to my dear friend Donna.

I am sorry to learn of Noel Edwards' passing. I have fond memories of being in his middle school science class where he would jokingly tease me about believing in things like "Big Foot" or UFOs. I was lucky to bump into him every now and then around Bethel. The last time I saw him, we were both filling our cars at the same gas station. I told him I no longer believed in Big Foot and we both had a good laugh. Mr. Edwards will truly be missed!
