Phyllis Wier Obituary

WIER Phyllis K. Wier, devoted and loving wife of Lewis E.(Ed) Wier for 58 years, died on April 12th, 2011. Born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, she graduated from the Ohio State University with a degree in dental hygiene. She was also an excellent horsewoman and bridge player, which came in handy later. Phyllis accompanied Ed to Air Force bases in Denver and the San Francisco Bay area, and then returned to Cincinnati where Ed joined Procter and Gamble. She continued her dental hygienist career until her children, Sherrie and Greg were born. She became very involved with the Heart Fund and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Always up for new adventures, she joined Ed when he was promoted to P&G's International Division, living in Mexico City, Caracas, Venezuela, Geneva, Switzerland and her all time favorite, Madrid, Spain. She remembered having a matador dedicate a bullfight to her, getting up at dawn to pick white truffles in Andorra, making weekly trips to the famed Castro "flea market" in old Madrid, and having Spanish furniture custom made in the other Toledo, Spain. She was an inveterate traveler, having also visited many Caribbean islands, Peru, Morocco, London, Paris, Rome, Germany, Australia, Hong Kong and Japan. Returning to the U. S., she also rekindled her lifelong love for animals and particularly Irish Setters. She started showing her Irish Setters and finished six champions after which she established her own bloodline under the kennel name Cullan and had her very own litter of "10 Reds" (her van license plate) many of which also finished their championships. A high point of her dog showing career was winning both Winners Dog and Winners Bitch with littermates at the 1993 Irish Setter Club of America National Specialty Show in Catskill N.Y. This was an accomplishment of which she was justly proud and has not been equaled either before or since. Her favorite plaque, given by her daughter, reads "I Got a Dog for My Kid; It was A Very Good Trade." A spirited, loving and outgoing person, she is survived by her husband, her two children Sherrie Howey of Scarsdale, New York and Greg Wier, of Mason, Ohio and her four grandchildren, Laura and Katie Howey and Bradley and Cristina Wier and her son in law, Bud Howey and daughter in law, Sandra Wier. Memorial services will be private and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to either the: Center for Family Support, 333 Seventh Avenue, 9th Floor, New York, N.Y.10001 or to the: Irish Setter Club of Central Connecticut Rescue Program, c/o Joanne Fenn, P.O. Box 555, Tariffville, CT. 06081. The Spear-Miller Funeral Home of Fairfield is assiting the family with arrangements. Dear Greg and family, Your mom sounds like a grand lady! How blessed to have such an adventurous mother! Please know we have prayed the Lord would grant you peace and strength during this time of sadness. We are never ready to say good bye, but just consider it a "so long, til we meet again" when we believe Jesus has conquered death and you will join Him and your mom in heaven one day. Ah, and what a day that will be! You are all very special to us!

Dear Greg and your dad, Ed...I can only imagine how sad you must be at the loss of Phyllis. She fought a hard battle and was very courageous from what Sandy tells us. I'll keep you in my prayers during Holy Week and Easter. Take care, Margaret O'Brien

It is every parent's wish to be outlived by her child. I'm sure it is a comfort that has no parallel, especially, to know they have left him with good friends and family. A soft, warm comfort. Love you, William

Phyllis and Christmas Goose were avid competitors back in 1995 when we competed against them. A wonderful person for the short period I knew her. Warmest regards for your loss.
