Laura Louise Pow Hartzell of East Lyme, passed away on July 30, 2013, surrounded by family and friends after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. She was born on April 29, 1960, in New London, CT. Laura was a teacher's aide at Flanders Elementary for 18 years. She loved working with and teaching children. Laura had many loves in her life but none more so than her family. There was never a sporting event, recital, or graduation too far to attend. Some of her happiest times were spent watching her children, nieces and nephews participate in their various favorite activities. Laura is survived by her beloved husband, retired USN CDR Steven Hartzell; her parents, retired USN FTCM Joseph and Ann Pow; her children Steven Hartzell and USN LT Michael Hartzell (Amanda Hartzell); her grandson, Tyler Hartzell; her future granddaughter, Evelyn Louise Hartzell; her brother, retired USAF Lt Col Joseph Pow (Jill Pow); her sister, Susan Bushey (Kim Bushey); her brother-in-law Timothy Hartzell (Patty Hartzell); her sister-in-law, Sandra Hanlon (John Hanlon); and her nieces and nephews, Joseph Pow, Andrew Pow, Adam Hartzell, Samantha Hartzell, Amber Hartzell, Kevin Hanlon, Megan Hanlon, Brian Bushey, Scott Bushey, Molly Bushey, Hannah Bushey, and Katie Bushey. Calling hours will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 3, at St Matthias Catholic Church, 317 Chesterfield Road, East Lyme. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 3.
