Al Vitello was my teacher, my coach and my mentor.

In 1961 Mr. Vitello taught me ancient history at DHS. Now more than fifty years later I still remember him talking about the fertile cresent. He was a tremendous teacher.
He was my basketball coach and even though we weren't very good we learned to work hard and respect others. Sometimes you can learn more in defeat than you can in victory. We were taught that in athletics as in life sometimes you just don't achieve everything you strive for. You just pick yourself up and set another goal and do your best. Your best is all you can do.
When I became the Athletic Director at Shelton High School Mr. Vitello, the long time athletic director at Derby, was still teaching me. Much of what I learned about dealing with people I learned from him. I remember riding to a Housatonic League meeting one day when he told me to call him AL. I remember telling him that I would. To this day I never could do it. To me he was always Mr. Vitello or Coach. Thank you Mr. Vitello for everything you did for me.
