Berke, Arnold
Arnold Berke, a long time Westport resident, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2014 at the age of 90. He was born on November 25, 1923 in New York and grew up in Sea Cliff, Long Island. He was a private first class in WWII and saw action in the European Theater. He graduated from New York University and worked for many years at Standard Shares as the Vice President, Secretary, of the New York office. Arnold and his wife Marjorie moved to Westport in 1955. He was a skilled woodworker and enjoyed building furniture for his home. As a long standing member of Cedar Point Yacht Club he was one of the top Lighting sailors in the 60's and 70's. He was also an avid tennis player and a tough bridge player. In later years Arnold was an active member of the Y's Men of Westport/Weston, STAR, inc. of CT, and Meals on Wheels. On October 3, 2009 he was presented with a public service award for Veterans of World War II by the Secretary of State. He and
Marjorie moved to Meadow Ridge in Redding, CT in 2011. He was a loving husband and devoted father who will be missed by all that knew him. He is survived by Marjorie, his wife of 61 years; His children George of Monroe, CT, Gregory of Dix Hills, NY and Debra Fitts of Delray, WV; his granddaughter Lyndsey Fitts of Westminster, VT; his sister Regina Brauer of Westport, CT; and two nieces and a nephew, Lisa, Amy and Henry Brauer.
