JOHNSON Everet R. Johnson, age 80, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 4, 2003, at Fletcher Allen Health Care with his family at his side. He was born on March 4, 1923, in Rockford, Ill., son of the late Simon and Olga (Sorderstrom) Johnson. Everet graduated from Rockford High School in Rockford, Ill., then attended Bethel College and graduated from Augsburg College, both in Minneapolis. He served with the United States Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. Everet and Laura moved to St. Albans in 1990 from Bridgeport, where he had served as director of the YMCA for 25 years. He was an accomplished pianist and a member of the First Baptist Church choir. Since moving to St. Albans, he was very active with local youth in softball pitching and was the softball pitching coach for Bellows Free Academy which recently brought three consecutive championships to St. Albans. Survivors include his wife, Laura (Kohler) Johnson of St. Albans; a son, Robert Johnson and his partner, Sonja Swanberg, of Burlington; two brothers, the Rev. Roy Johnson and his wife, Joan, of Minneapolis, and the Rev. George Johnson and his wife, Dorothy, of Albany, Ore.; three sisters, Margaret Douglas and Ruth Jay, both of Massillon, Ohio, and Irene Ekland of Colfax, Wis. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 10, 2003, at 3 p.m. in the First Baptist Church, Congress Street, with the Rev. William Simmons and his brother, the Rev. Roy Johnson co-officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday from noon until 2 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. Private interment services will be held at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph, with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Everet R. Johnson Scholarship Fund, c/o Shirley Raymond, Bellows Free Academy, 71 South Main Street, St. Albans, VT 05478, to be used to help girls attend the Johnny Stratton Pitching Clinic.
