Jane Andrews Mack obituary

Jane Mack Obituary

MACK Dr. Jane Andrews Mack, a 61 year resident of Nichols, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, November 17, 2010, after a long life dedicated to her family and to serving others. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. A. Gerard Mack, and a grandchild, Emma Jane von Euler. She was born in Albany, NY on December 5, 1916 to Harold and Lillian Andrews and was the eldest of five children. She attended the Albany Academy for Girls and graduated from Vassar College. Following college she obtained a medical degree from Albany Medical College where she met her future husband, Jerry Mack. She was one of six women in Albany Medical College at the time. She accepted an internship at Bridgeport Hospital as the hospital's first woman intern and returned to Albany Medical College for her residency in pediatrics. She married Jerry during her residency, and after his tour of duty in the Navy they settled in Bridgeport where Jerry practiced OB-GYN while Jane stayed at home for 25 years to raise her family and to serve her community as a volunteer. Jane re-entered the medical profession in 1966 for what became a 40-year career as a Bridgeport public health pediatrician working part-time in school-based health clinics after the youngest of her seven children enrolled in kindergarten. At one point in her forty years of service she was the only pediatrician working at six clinics with thousands of patients. In 1999, Jane was honored for 25 years of service in the state Women's, Infant's and Children's Nutritional Program (WIC), a program that she was instrumental in bringing to Bridgeport. She also initiated and led Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness programs in the city. She received numerous other commendations over the years, including "Dr. Mack Day" in 2000, Girl Scouts "Women of Distinction" award in 2002, "Certificate of Distinction" by the Fairfield County Medical Association for her many years of medical practice and numerous other recognitions. Jane made quality health care for the children of Bridgeport her passion and formed lifelong relationships with her patients, treating generations of families. She retired from her medical practice at the age of 89 at the North End Clinic after it became a private practice. The clinic was dedicated in her honor. She said of her work, "For me, this job is so rewarding, it's selfish." In spite of her busy life as a dedicated medical professional, Jane always put her family first, including her husband, seven children, fourteen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. At her 90th birthday celebration, Jane's children and grandchildren wrote loving tributes to her that recalled her exceptional generosity, unfailing attentiveness, and humbling selflessness. Her enormous capacity to love and care for her large family seemed boundless. Her house was always filled with good people, bountiful food, and freshly baked cookies. Everyone loved puttering in the kitchen with "Gram" as she baked. She will be missed by many, especially by her family (and the birds, squirrels, and woodchuck at Carolton). She is survived by Peter and Ann Marie Mack, David and Ellen Mack, Susan and Peter Harvey, Steven and Meg Mack, Bob and Paula Mack, John and Joyce Mack, and Nancy and Peter von Euler. She is survived by her grandchildren Liz and Josh Jenisch, Thomas and Leslie Harvey, Dr. Peter and Jessica Mack, Peter Harvey, Stephen Mack, Greg Mack, Chris Mack, Shannon Mack, Geoff Mack, Katie Mack, Douglas Harvey, Eric Mack, Sarah von Euler, and two great-grandchildren, Virginia Harvey and Jones Jenisch. The family would like to express its gratitude for the loving care that she received by all of the staff at the Carolton Nursing Home. We also thank the John Mack family for its daily devotion to Jane's care and well-being. A Memorial Mass celebrating Jane's life will be held on Friday, November 26, 2010 at 2 p.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Shelton Rd., Nichols, CT with Monsignor Richard Shea officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jane's memory to Bridgeport Child Advocacy Coalition, 2470 Fairfield Ave., Bridgeport, CT 06605. Arrangements entrusted to the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull. To light a virtual candle, visit us at www.abriola.com.

I am truly sorry for the loss of Dr. Jane Mack.Such a warm, genuine and caring person whose love for all knew no bounds. She had an infectous sense of humor (especially love the picture of her pretending to fly down the hill with no brakes in the wheelchair)and enthusiam for the love of life.I had to maintain my sense of professionalism in order to best serve her but she worked her way into my heart. In almost 20 years i have had my special residents I shall not forget but Jane I will always call my friend. She was so wonderful to the disabled youth who volunteer under me genuinely enjoying and encourageing them & their visits.I have other resident's who worked with her and they tell me stories about her dedecation to the children she worked with and what a pleasure it was to be associated with her.I truly enjoyed my many visits with her. She was truly special in so many ways. I can smell the freshly baked donuts she and Emma are making as every day is Donut Sunday in heaven!

To the Mack Family: Jane was quite a woman. I had the pleasure of knowing her for many years, working together in Bridgeport's School Based Health Centers, and as the mom of one of my dearest friends, her daughter Nancy. Jane exuded love for all, and a belief in equality that went beyond anything I had ever experienced. Her energy was amazing, never slowing down, even as an 80+ year old still practicing. She lived a full life, and left such a legacy in her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Now she gets to rest, reunited with her husband and beautiful granddaughter Emma.

Jane Mack was a sprightly soul of kindness and good deeds in our neighborhood as well as Bridgeport. My mother saved newspaper articles about your mom’s generous work with the most needy and also told us of her legendary baking prowess. We would see groups of inner-city kids enjoying a swim in your backyard pool. Wasn’t your mom the owner of Penny, the dog that protected the neighborhood? Though we all have our share of life’s tragedies, it was your mother who would take time out of her busy life to quietly slip in the last pew of St. Catherine’s to share the grief at a neighbor’s wake. We received Christmas photos every year of your family and you all looked well taken care of. On top of all that, she was a pediatrician who actually enjoyed children! How did she stuff so much into a lifetime? Though I left Nichols 33 years ago, the industrious and generous spirit of that woman stayed with me all my life. Heartfelt condolences to all of you, she was one in a million!

Jane was a special lady whose enthusiasm for life and wonder sense of humor was contagious. Her love of life, family and the children of the world was inspiring. I enjoyed our daily visits sharing family stories, olive bread and jelly belly jelly beans. She was a friend who I will carry in my heart always. If they dont have "donut sunday" in heaven already, Jane will be the one the start it! I will miss seeing her family... my thoughts and prayers are with them during this time.
