Patricia Cook Obituary

COOK Patricia Hemenway Cook, age 59, who made the quantum leap from the Cabaret Theatre at Sacred Heart University to starring in "Evita" on Broadway and in the national touring company, died after a long illness on November 17, 2009 at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport. She was the wife of C. Donald Cook and resided in the Black Rock section of Bridgeport. Several family members considered her the "Auntie Mame" of the Hemenway clan. Hemenway Cook's involvement with the theater was nearly lifelong, punctuated by starring roles everywhere from the living room in the family home on Round Hill Drive in Fairfield to Broadway. She studied dance under Irene Comer, a noted area instructor, and performed in recitals at the Klein Memorial Auditorium in Bridgeport. Two decades later, when she starred as Eva Peron on Broadway, the white dress she wore for a balcony scene reminded her of a similar gown worn when she played Cinderella in a grade school production at St. Thomas School in Fairfield. At Roger Ludlowe High School, she was cast as Daisy Mae in "Li'l Abner" and as Josephine in "H.M.S. Pinafore," but those were mere stepping stones. As a Sacred Heart University undergraduate, Hemenway was among a handful of students (and a faculty member, Claude McNeal) who founded the Cabaret Theatre in 1970. After earning a bachelor's degree in English in 1972, she continued to perform at the Cabaret, both on campus and later following its move to downtown Bridgeport in 1976. Combining social commentary with satire, the troupe performed 17 original musicals in four and one-half years. After a summer at the Candlewood Playhouse, Patty made a career move to New York City. Within a year, after signing with an agent and gigs at the Little Hippodrome and on the TV soap, "The Doctors," she found herself auditioning for the national tour of "Evita." Among those who would decide her future was none other than Hal Prince, the musical's Tony Award-winning director, a man whose catalog of credits includes "Cabaret," "Damn Yankees" and "Fiddler on the Roof." Patty once recalled how nervous she felt prior to the audition. "I stopped at St. Patrick's and said my prayers. Then they warned me that 'he will most likely stop you. But that won't mean anything - he's pressed for time.'" Prince liked what he heard. Not only did he allow her to perform the entire rendition of "Rainbow High," but he asked her to sing "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina," "Buenos Aires" and other show-stoppers. The following morning, she was awakened by a telephone call informing her that she had not one but two parts in the show - an aristocrat in the evening performances and the starring role of "Evita" in the matinees. Patricia Hemenway Cook's rise in "Evita" was rapid. The road show sold out the 5,000-seat Masonic Temple in Detroit in its debut, and was a smash in Cleveland, Baltimore, Atlanta, New Orleans, Pittsburgh and elsewhere. Within months, she was called to New York to star as Eva Peron in the Broadway production's matinee performances and play an aristocrat in the evening shows. After more rave reviews, she was elevated to the lead role in the evening. Remembering those not-so-distant yesterdays, she said that it was "easier to perform 'Evita' six nights a week instead of twice. Your voice found its comfort place with the score. You're so energized. The role is so challenging. I was constantly changing and improving it." Struck by spinal meningitis and hospitalized in 1983, Patty had time to rethink her theatrical career and assess her life. She enrolled in a course at Fairfield University, where she became the school's assistant director of special events. It was there that she met Don Cook, then the Stags' director of athletics. They were married on June 17, 1988. During the late 1980s, Patty returned to "Evita" briefly and performed with an international company in Geneva, Switzerland. A decade later, she added "Entrepreneur" to her list of credits when she formed Hemenway Productions LLC. Her company presented the highly acclaimed Missoula Children's Theatre Camp at five locations in Fairfield County, including her alma mater's then-new William H. Pitt Health and Recreation Center. The latter site was doubly apropos: Don Cook was now the director of athletics at Sacred Heart. "I can't say I struggled," she once said. "I certainly had a Cinderella story." In addition to her husband of 21 years, she is survived by two stepchildren, Christopher Cook and his wife, Camilla, of Norwalk, and Dr. Courtney Stephenson and her husband, Dr. Stephen Stephenson, of Charlotte, N.C.; and two step-grandchildren, George and Julianna Stephenson of Charlotte. She is also survived by two sisters, Betsy Redgate and her husband, Thomas, of Fairfield, and Catherine Stone of Fairfield; a brother, Dr. Charles G. "Jerry" Hemenway Jr. and his wife, Carol, of Fairfield; nieces Cara Redgate, Mary Stone Creecy (Channing), Molly Hemenway and Sarah Lally (Bob); and nephews Patrick Redgate, Brendan Stone (Miyuki) and Charles Hemenway 3rd (Tricia); and grand-nieces and -nephews Matthew and Claire Lally, Kai Charles Stone and Charles, Benjamin and Elizabeth Hemenway. Other survivors include a sister-and brother-in-law, Patricia Alice Cook and Don Harrison; their daughters, Rachel Harrison Anderson (Jeffrey), Erin Elizabeth Harrison French (Gregory) and Alexis P. Harrison; and their grandchildren, Lauren French and Luke Anderson, all of Fairfield. She was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Margaret E. "Betty" Hemenway, and a nephew, Thomas Redgate Jr. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 11:00 am, in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 149 South Pine Creek Road, Fairfield, with the Rev. John P. Baran officiating. Interment will be private in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Friends may greet the family on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Redgate - Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Sacred Heart University General Scholarship Fund, c/o Office of Annual Giving, 5151 Park Avenue, Fairfield, CT 06825. Dear Don, I think of Patty very often and decided today to look her up. Imagine my deep sadness to learn this news.

I first met and worked with Patty in the early 1990's when I began working at the Missoula Children's Theatre. She was, undoubtedly, one of my favorite Presenters and one of the first on the East Coast!! I had the pleasure of enjoying lunch with her in the city one year during the annual APAP arts conference and that afternoon still makes me laugh---the stories we talked about and my eventual 'gaffe' when telling one has provided me with a great, self-deprecating story. We kept in touch a little bit after she left the U and then lost touch.
Patty was very, very dear to me and I am so sorry for your loss. She always twinkled when she talked about you and I am sorry we never had the chance to meet. Some time in this next year, I will be in the Fairfield area and will look you up---to meet the famous "Don" will be a treat. I am in my 20th year with MCT now and Patty had much to do with my job satisfaction and was an amazing supporter of our work. Do take care. I was recently reminiscing and thinking about all the people that had a major influence in my life. Patty came to mind and I decided that I wanted to contact her to say thank you. I was very saddened to find that she had left us. My thoughts go with her family and I just wanted you to know that she had a wonderful effect on all that had the pleasure of knowing her.
I had the pleasure of singing by her side in a few, early Downtown Cabaret theatre performances and I have never forgotten her wonderful voice and more her unbelievably kind soul. God Bless and keep her in your arms.

I just learned of Patty's passing. I first met Patty in 1976 when I was an appretice at the Downtown Cabaret. I was promoted from usher to dresser and had the opportunity and fun of being in the dressig room. Patty and the early days of the Cabaret were my inspiration to major in theatre.

It was the summer of 1978, it was a different world, and a different time.
I was an apprentice with several different Theater companies in Conn.
But most importantly I was the lead spotlight operator at the Downtown Cabaret Theater in Bridgeport Conn.
Where night after night and week after week, I had the privlage of following that companies Star, with, what was once known as the Lime Light.
Single handed the most talented, most beautiful, and with the most wonderful voice. I went on to become a student of hers, and learned not only how to truly sing, and use stage makeup, but Patty's secret of how to connect with the audience, which she showed us, and used every time she performed. And a few years later when she sang to me, from the stage of the "Broadway Theater" as Evita, I knew, her lessons
got her far. She would try to get us to laugh when she would just show up, in a production number, of one of our weekly Cabaret For Kids Shows, and then she was gone.
Patty, inspired us, taught us, and melted our hearts, in and out of costume or makeup. And I will never forget the little containers of fudge she would make for us at Christmas Time. I got to costar with her, in a show called The Seventies, and I continue to use the tools that she taught me, every time I take the stage.
My Condolences to everyone who's lives She touched. A New Star Burns In The Heavens.

In addition to her enormous talents, Patty possessed such a warm, perceptive and penetrating nature. She approached everyone with a great big, gracious smile and open heart. I loved her magnetic sense of humor and style. She had wonderful comedic instincts. I feel so fortunate to have worked with her at Fairfield University and to have shared many memorable times together. Patty was one in a million. My very, very best to Don and the Hemenway and Cook families.

Dear Don,
I remember so well the day you and Patty first connected. We all drove down to the Meadowlands together where she was going to sing the national anthem at the basketball game. Something special was clearly in the air and the two of you had dinner together after the game...and fell in love. I felt honored to have been present when it all began. Please know that you are in my heart, dear friend.

Patty & I performed together at SHU and Downtown Cabaret. She was always the "Lead"...a brilliant performer & singer. We Continued our friendship both living in N.Y.C. I would go with her & watch her rehearsals for 'Evita'...and performances as well. She was a true Star and a gracious and wonderful person. I am so very sorry, more than I can express, to hear of her passing. She put a strong & fabulous imprint on so many people's lives. I will miss her and so will many, many others.

I am truly devastated by this news I have stumbled upon. Many, many years ago, I was Patty's dresser backstage at the Cabaret Theater in downtown Bridgeport. We spent many evenings laughing and yelling and enjoying the time we spent in theater. It was truly one of the best times of my young adult life. As I moved on I have followed her career and life but as we all know life takes over and I lost touch with many of those from the Cabaret days. My deepest condolences to her family and all of those whose life was touched by her talent and love. -

Patty was the vocalist at my wedding at St. Theresa parish, Trumbull in May, 1987. I knew her through my work as the SHU Alumni Director. She looked so lovely that day...I have a photo of her in her large picture hat and beautiful dress. She is also on our wedding video. When she sang the Ave Maria it was the most magnificent rendition I had ever heard, and there was not a dry eye among our guests. When we were in the receiving line after the ceremony, Patty was outside on the steps of the church saying hello to folks and receiving many compliments. I think a few people even asked her for her autograph! She made our wedding day very special. She was an extraordinary, talented women, one I was privileged to know. May she rest in peace.

By todays standards Patricia Hemenway Cook's life on earth was too short .Patty was a beautiful person who has taken her place among the immortals in our life.No one has touched us more with her prestine love for her family and friends than she.Although our contacts over the years were relatively few we always felt her warmth penetrating our souls when we were together. We wish that we could have enjoyed her charming desposition and beautiful sound of her voice more but God's will was to have her closer to him.
Don;we love you with all of our heart and hope we can be counted on to be of some comfort to you during these trying times and always.

I met Patty just after she left her job at Fairfield U. She was a strong, thoughtful, warm HUMAN human being. She had not started her production company yet and was 'in between'. But she had a wholeness about her--it was clear she would find the thing that would bring joy to her only if it would bring true joy to others. I believe it is a rare person you meet for a short period of time that makes a lasting impression. That was Patty. God Bless.
