DEER Ralph John Deer, age 70 of the Black Rock section of Bridgeport, entered into eternal rest peacefully at his home on January 6, 2011, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer surrounded by his loving family. Ralph leaves behind his beloved wife of 48 years Renate Mueller Deer, and their four children, Karen Steger and companion, Walter Whitehead, Patti Deer, Charles Deer and wife, Delores, and Mark Deer and wife, Patricia. Ralph is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Brian and Michaela Steger, Faith, Noah, Grace and Alexander Deer. He is also survived by his brother, John A. Deer and his spouse, George Van Daele. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Ella Mueller and a host of family and friends. He was born in Bridgeport on February 5, 1940, to the late Alphonse and Josephine Deer. After 30 years of service, Ralph retired with the rank of lieutenant from the Bridgeport Fire Department. During his retirement, Ralph was a driver for Collins Pharmacy and First Student Bus Company of Fairfield. Ralph was a lifelong member of the Boy Scouts of America. He served as scoutmaster for Troop 38 in Black Rock for 20 years where he led numerous young men to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. Ralph earned several awards for his outstanding service including the Scoutmaster of Merit. Ralph was a member of many service organizations including Order of the Arrow, Vigil Honor Member Owaneco Lodge 313, Bridgeport Area Retired Firefighters, Friends of Pomperaug, Arthur C. Luf Children's Burn Camp and Retired Policemen & Firemen's Association of Bridgeport. Ralph's hobbies included traveling and railroading. He was also an avid fan of the Bridgeport Bluefish and Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The family would like to thank Drs. Paul and Amy Berard and his staff at St. Vincent's Cancer Care Center. The family also extends a special thank you to the staff at VITAS Hospice Care for their compassionate care. Friends are invited to attend the funeral on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at 10 a.m. DIRECTLY at St. Ann Church, 481 Brewster Street, Black Rock. Friends may call on Monday January 10, 2011 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Larson Funeral Home 2496 North Ave, Bridgeport. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Swim Across the Sound, The Lusgarten Foundation, B.S.A. Troop 38 Black Rock CT, CT, Yankee Council Owaneco Lodge 313, Arthur C.
