Barbara A. Switzer, 88 died Thursday morning at her granddaughter's home in Wilder, VT. She was born September 21, 1925 in Weston , CT the daughter of Charles and Barbara (Burr) Newell. She grew up in Westport , CT where she attended Staples High School. She worked for a short time at Woolworth's Five & Dime in Norwalk , CT before she married William Switzer, May 21, 1948. They first made their home in Weston and then later in Westport before they bought a home in Fairfield , CT where they live all their married lives. Barbara worked as a child care provider at the local YMCA in Fairfield . Mr. Switzer died July 30, 1997. Due to her poor health, Barbara moved to Wilder, VT a couple of months ago, to live with her granddaughter and primary caregiver, Tracy Henry and her daughter, Bunny.
Barbara was a former member of the First Congregational Church in Fairfield , CT and the VFW Auxiliary in Westport , CT. She was a talented seamstress. Enjoyed sewing, baking, puzzles and loved to play cards.
She was predeceased by her husband, twin daughter, Bonnie Switzer, and brother, Charles Newell, Jr. She is survived by three daughters, Robyn Mackenzie of Selwyn, Ontario, Canada, Bunny Switzer of Wilder, VT, Rebecca Sniadecki of Sandy Hook, CT, seven grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, four great, great grandchildren, two sisters, Betty Gleason and Beverly Newell both of Norwalk, CT and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at a later date in the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield , CT. The Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., VT has been entrusted with arrangements. Condolences may be expressed to Barbara's family in an online guest book at
