BUTLER - Reverend Monroe Butler Sr., age 83 of Bridgeport entered into eternal rest Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at Bridgeport Hospital. Born May 5, 1930 to the late Vealey and Stella O'Neal Butler in Mt. Vernon, NY. Monroe attended elementary and junior high school in NY and Connecticut. He graduated from Penn Normal Industrial and Agriculture Boarding School in Beaufort, SC. Upon completion he returned to Connecticut and found employment at the Bassick Company. While at Bassick, he was inducted into the United States Army and served two years in Germany during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. He returned to Bassick Company and retired after 37 ½ years and he also worked for Pitney Bowes 12 years. Monroe married the late Alfreda Rooks and became the father of eight children plus one son from a previous relationship. He was baptized at the Macedonia Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, NY; he then moved to Stratford, Connecticut in 1943 and joined the First Baptist Church of Stratford. Reverend Butler was ordained March 31, 1984 at First Baptist Church of Stratford by the late Reverend Dr. William O. Johnson, Pastor. Reverend Butler attended the Hartford Seminary, received a certificate from the Black Ministers Program and graduated from the Connecticut School of Christian Religion. He accepted the call to pastor the Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church November 4, 1989, where he served his congregation and community faithfully until he retired in 2009 and continued to serve the West River Nursing Home after his retirement. He also became a faithful disciple of the Friendship Baptist Church of Stratford and served diligently until the Lord called him home. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wife and three sons. Survivors include three sons, James (Shirley) Sanders, Minister Monroe Butler, Jr., and Louis Rascoe; three daughters, Angela Monica Butler, Jannie (Ernest) Williams, Molly (Reverend Harry) Hayes; a sister Salona (David Williams); niece/goddaughter, Dawn Bailey Johnson, one nephew, one niece and a host of grand, great grandchildren and other family members. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 26, 2014, 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Stratford, 1301 Stratford Ave., Stratford with Rev. Johnny Gamble officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Grove Cemetery, Easton. Friends are invited to the viewing Wednesday from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM at the church. See
