Mary Samuskewicz Horelick, age 97, lifelong resident of Stratford, died on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at Bridgeport Hospital.
Mary was born on February 9, 1917 in Bridgeport, the beloved daughter of Michael and Helen Samuskewicz. She retired from the Bryant Electric Co. after 30 years of service. Mary was devoted to her Russian Orthodox Faith and had a long history of service to her Church. She was a past member of Holy Ghost Russian Orthodox Church where she and her late husband, Walter, were the first couple to be married in the newly constructed Church on East Main Street. She also participated in many organizations at Holy Ghost such as: Church Council, P.T.O., Women's Guild, Shelton Property, Kitchen Fund, Senior Citizens, and St. Mary's Society. She was a current member of St. Herman of Alaska Russian Orthodox Church. She was involved with the Junior F.R.O.C. Club and a member of the Atlantic District Turtles. Mary was also a Den Mother of Scout Pack 78 at Eli Whitney Elementary School. Her first love was for her family and next came her love for gardening and cooking.
Mary is survived by her loving son and daughter-in-law, Walter and Elizabeth of Ramona, CA and daughter Tanya Guba of Stratford; two grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Posser and her husband Michael of Stratford and Walter Daniel Horelick of Pismo Beach, CA; three great grandchildren, Katie, Alyssa Mary and Michael Posser of Stratford; brother and sister-in-law, John and Connie Somoskovec of Bethel; sister, Sophie Rogers of Orange; goddaughter, Linda Gasper of East Hampton.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her loving husband, Walter, Mary was predeceased by her son Thomas John; sister, Nadya; brothers, Michael, Alexander, and Peter; and son-in-law, John J. Guba.
Friends are invited to attend the funeral on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at 11:00 am in the Pistey Funeral Home, 2155 Main Street, Stratford and at 12:00 Noon at St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, 1 Honeyspot Road, Stratford.
