MacIlvain, SR. Ethel
Sister Ethel MacIlvain (Sister Mary Carl), a member of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, West Hartford, CT died at Lourdes Health Care Center in Wilton, CT on April 26, 2014. Born in New York, NY, on December 8, 1922, of the late Karl Messenger MacIlvain and Ethel Adelaide Nolan MacIlvain, Sister Ethel entered the Sisters of Saint Joseph on September 14, 1940 and celebrated her perpetual Profession of Vows on August 24, 1949. Sister was 91 years of age and had been in Religious Life for 74 years. Sister Ethel graduated from Diocesan Teachers College, West Hartford, CT, with a Bachelor of Arts in Education and received a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Nazareth College in Rochester, NY. She completed a Masters in Administration and Music Education from the University of Bridgeport, CT, and also, a 6th Year Certificate in Administration/Supervision from the University of Bridgeport, CT. Sister Ethel began her teaching career in the Archdiocese of Hartford School System and taught at St. Mary's School in Lee, MA for two years. She then had a full career as Principal in St. Lawrence, West Haven, CT; St. James, Stratford, CT; St. Louis, West Haven, CT; St. James, Danielson, CT; and St. Joseph Shelton, CT. Sister Ethel spent her last years in active ministry as a teacher at St. Rose of Lima in Newtown, CT. Sister Ethel will be remembered for her kind and gentle spirit. Her interest in all of her staff members and the school parents made her beloved by all those with whom she came in contact. Being a fun person to be with, the happy times spent with her staff, whether at Watch Hill or Cape Cod, were fondly remembered by them. She maintained long friendships with them. Sister loved her pet dogs and cats. She was a super dog-trainer who gently taught the dogs to quickly learn all commands. Sister also loved expressing herself artistically by teaching piano and music and gathering others to create works of art. Our prayerful, gentle Sister will be sadly missed. Sister Ethel was predeceased by her twin sister, Sister Eileen MacIlvain, RSM, and her brother, Vincent MacIlvain. She is survived by her Sisters in Community, her sister-in-law, Frances MacIlvain, her nieces and nephews, and many friends.
