A Mass of Christian Burial for Genevieve Shanley Smith who died in her 100th year, May 23, 2014, the devoted wife of the late Ronald R. Smith, loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, will be celebrated at 10:00 am, Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at the Church of the Assumption, 75 Center Road, Woodbridge. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery in New Haven. The Keenan Funeral Home, 238 Elm Street, West Haven is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Smith, the daughter of the late Thomas P. Shanley and Mary A. Cannon Shanley, was born in New Haven, October 13, 1914. She is survived by her children, William R. Smith and his wife Mary, of Litchfield, CT and Florida, Barbara S. Geelan and her husband James, of Orlando, FL, and Eileen S. Serra and her husband Vincent, of Huntington, CT; 10 very special grandchildren and 20 cherished great grandchildren. Besides her husband Ronald, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Cathleen Smith D'Antonio, of Easton, PA, and two sisters, Mary Sweeney of New London, and Catherine Carter of Hamden. Mrs. Smith was a resident of Woodbridge for over 60 years and with her late husband attended Knights of Columbus social events and was active in church and community affairs for most of those years. She had been employed by the Connecticut Union of Telephone Workers for over 30 years. She was a member of the New Haven Council of Catholic Women, St. Raphael's Hospital Auxillary, the West Haven Irish-American Club, the New Haven Gaelic Football and Hurling Society, and was a former president of the Church of the Assumption Women's Guild. In more recent years she was active in the Woodbridge Senior Center, and volunteered for several years at the Willows Convalescent Home in Woodbridge. Her service at the Willows was recognized by the Connecticut Association of Healthcare Facilities who named her the 2012 Volunteer of the Year. She was the loving and caring matriarch of a large extended and close-knit family that included all of her parent's descendants and their spouses, and celebrated their family ties at gatherings at Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and numerous other family events.
