Barton, Dorothy
Dorothy Barton passed away early morning June 21, 2014 after a brief illness but had suffered from a broken heart since her husband died 20 months ago.
She was the daughter of Dr. Charles Snurkowski and wife Ann of New Haven, CT. She is survived by daughter Deborah Ann Barton of Stratford CT, her three sisters, Joan, Jane, Clare and husbands, from CT and RI and many nieces and nephews in a large loving family. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Deacon John Barton and son Jackie 28 years ago.
In her youth she was athletic and enjoyed skating, swimming and diving. She was a graduate of St. Vincent's School of Nursing and was proud to be a registered nurse. However, she became interested in teaching and went on to receive a Masters in Education.
Her passion was teaching and she taught third grade at St. James for 17 years. She also found time to volunteer at the Catholic Center and the Merton House over the years. She and her husband loved going to Okemo, Vermont and we spent many happy summers there. She loved the beach and enjoyed many wonderful times at Old Kelsey Point in Westbrook. Until the end, she always loved her crossword puzzles.
She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend to many. She touched many lives deeply in so many different and special ways. She was a modest woman who always put her family, friends and students first. She was a proper lady who always did the right thing for others in her own unique style. She lived a beautiful, valiant and fulfilling life and handled everything the Lord gave her to bear with grace and dignity. She grew to truly love animals and had Pepe and Lola by her side. Dorothy was loved by all and will be deeply missed.
Friends are invited to attend the funeral on Thursday, June 26, 2014 at 11:00 am DIRECTLY at Our Lady of Grace Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Monsignor Martin J. Ryan. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to an animal shelter of your choice or the Merton House.
