Joél Cruz Cotto age 26 of Bridgeport, CT., passed away on the 8th of August 2014. Joél was born in Bridgeport, CT. to Cruz Manuel and Norma Iris Cotto on December 28, 1987. He graduated from St. Joseph's High School in 2005. A member of the Veteran's Nation Honor Society, he was a full time student / senior attending the University of New Haven's Criminal Justice Program. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and attained the rank of Sergeant. He served for 4 years and was a veteran of the Afghanistan war and was awarded Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon and NATO Medal. He loved playing softball, shooting pool and was a DJ in many of the local nightclubs. In 2007, he was awarded the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Chief of Police Civilian Commendation for risking his life to rescue a woman that had fallen on the train tracks with an oncoming train approaching. Joél Cruz Cotto is survived by: his son, Isaiah Joél Cotto, and his mother, Christine Cotto; daughter, Jocellis Nicole Cotto, and her mother, Miriamcellis Morales: sisters and brother Michelle Cotto, Manuel Cotto and Nicole Elizabeth Cotto: and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Calling hours will take place on Thursday August 14, 2014 from 4-8pm in the Commerce Hill Funeral Home, located at 4798 Main Street Bridgeport, CT 06606. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10am in the Good Shepard Christian Church, located at 725 Hancock Ave. Bridgeport, CT. 06605, with the Reverend Dr. Simon Castillo officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport with full military honors. Pallbearers will be: Elliot Rios, Luis Rivera, Lubriel Rivera, Paul Joseph Morin, Francisco Cotto III and Tito Aponte Jr. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in the children's names at the accounts reserved at the Bridgeport Police Federal Union.
