Gillespy, Joseph H.
Joseph "Jack" Harry Gillespy, Sr. age 78, of Stratford, died on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at St. Vincent Medical Center. He was the beloved husband of Kathleen Gillespy for 57 years.
He was born in Bridgeport, a son of William J. and Catherine Weide Gillespy,.
Formerly of Bridgeport, he called Stratford home for over 40 years, but was always proud to have been a "South Ender".
At the age of eighteen, Jack was drafted into the US Army where he proudly served his country in Korea and received an honorable discharge. For a brief time, Jack was a semi-pro boxer. He received his training at Billy Neri's Gym in Bridgeport and his father was his trainer. He had worked for many years at Lombard Brothers in Bridgeport and before his retirement, he had been employed for several years at the Fairfield County Hunt Club in Westport. Jack enjoyed reading non-fiction and his hobbies included fishing and hunting with both bow and rifle. He spent many a happy hour walking the woods in Newfane and Fairlea, VT. Jack was always known as a "sharp dresser".
Jack's most treasured times were those spent with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Kathy, he is survived by his six children, Joseph H. Gillespy, Jr. of Florida, Elaine Gillespy and her fiance', Scott Hutchinson, of Stratford, Kathleen Gillespy Maccharoli of Newtown, James Gillespy and Lisa of Milford, Sean Gillespy of Stratford and Robert Gillespy of Stratford; five beloved grandchildren, Nicholas and Lauren, Alyssa, Gina and Michael; and two cherished great-grandchildren, Kourtney and Lacey. He also leaves to mourn his loss his three sisters and their spouses, Joyce and David Boston, Sr. of Huntington, Martha and Samuel Porto of Arizona, and Lucy and John Gieurula of Waterbury. Jack was Uncle to many nieces and nephews and will be remembered by his numerous cousins. Also left to treasure his memory is his cousin, Jacqueline Weide Coppola of Cape Cod, with whom he shared a special bond. Jack was predeceased by his two brothers, Richard A. Gillespy and William J. Gillespy, Jr.
Private funeral services with military honors were held on Friday at Mountain Grove of Easton Cemetery. Please visit to leave condolences online.
