BERTA Gerald F. Berta, "Jabber," age 72, beloved husband of Irene Canepari Berta of Shelton, died peacefully on June 24, 2010 at Griffin Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Shelton on July 3, 1937, the son of the late Jerry and Josephine Speck Berta, he was a lifetime resident of Shelton. Mr. Berta, a veteran of the U.S. Army, held many jobs and was retired from the Yankee Gas Company after many years of service. Gerald loved the sport of horse racing. He also loved baseball and he played for both UConn and SCSU during the late 50s. He was a member of St. Margaret Mary Parish and the AM Club of Derby. In addition to his devoted wife, he is survived by his daughter, Lee Berta and cherished grandson, Andrew McCoy of Norwalk; step-daughters, Jennifer Trasacco of West Haven and Jocelyn McQuillan and husband, Eric of Seymour; his sister, Joan Hellauer and her husband, Robert of Shelton; a nephew, Robert E. Hellauer, Jr.; niece, Gretchen Hellauer Magel; and four grandnephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved son, Frank A. Berta. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Margaret Mary Church, 380 Long Hill Ave., Shelton. Burial will be private.
