CUMMINGS Robert J. Cummings, Sr., age 84, of Trumbull, passed away on Sunday, December 5, 2010 in his home, with his loving family by his side. The youngest of four children, Robert was born in Bridgeport, to Dr. Thomas F. and Ann Cummings and spent his formative years there. A World War II veteran, Robert proudly served in the U.S. Navy and was aboard the lead ship to enter Japan after the second bomb was dropped. He was among the first to see the devastation. Robert was honorably discharged after witnessing the historical signing of the document that ended the war with Japan. After returning stateside, Robert completed his education, where he met and married the love of his life, Elizabeth. They moved to Trumbull, where he raised five children. and retired from United Illuminating Company after forty-two years of service. He is predeceased by his beloved wife of forty years, Elizabeth, a daughter, Marie, and his son-in-law, Philip Kupec. Robert is survived by his four children and twelve grandchildren; Robert J. Cummings, Jr, and his wife Barbara, of Florida, and their children, Amanda and Benjamin, Kevin J. Cummings, and his wife, Dorothy, of Vermont, and their children, Kevin, Emily, Peter, and his wife Mandy, David, Louise, and Claire, Timothy K. Cummings, of Trumbull, Linda L. Kupec, of Oxford, and her children, Joshua and Olivia, Keith J. Cummings, and his wife Jean, of Huntington, and their children, John and Joseph. He will be remembered as a devoted husband and father. A quiet man who treasured his family, he will be greatly misssed. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 9, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield Center and 11:30 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, in Trumbull. Interment will follow with full military honors at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 from 4-8 pm.
