JEFFERY Ruth Pease Doolittle Jeffery, wife of the late Robert Knapp Jeffery, died on Friday, March 2, 2012 at the age of 90. She had been residing at the Regency House in Wallingford. Ruth grew up in Milford's Pond Point community, forming enduring bonds with fellow beach kids known as "The Gang," and developed a life-long love of nature, birding, and connecting with people, above all family. Hers was a life of strength and action. Always adventurous, she swam "Point to Point," day-sailed a catboat at Cape Cod, and even skied New England and Canada in the 1950's in the early days of the sport. Ruth reached out to others, giving of her time and talents freely: volunteering at the Veteran's Hospital and the Milford Red Cross, listening to family and friends and offering honest and sage advice, showing grandchildren how to create their own driftwood creations in her upstairs "hobbyshop," inspiring them as adults to work creatively with their hands. She was a woman of many talents--a natural storyteller with a quick and irreverent wit, her kitchen and "the library" were sanctuaries for friends and family. Her hosting of family gatherings (legendary Thanksgiving Eve parties, Thanksgiving dinners for dozens and memorable Christmas brunches) were all fueled by both love of her gourmet cooking and her family. In her spare time, she accrued master points from duplicate competitive bridge. Ruth did all this while raising her three sons and contributing to family support by helping out at the family-run Fairchild's, a Bridgeport jewelry business. Later she would use her considerable retail skills at the Yale Co-Op and Esther's. Her independent spirit ultimately led to a life of reflection, sharing, and love--well-lived and fondly remembered. Ruth is survived by her children, son Robert Knapp Jeffery, Jr. of Annandale, Virginia, son William Austin JefferySr. and his wife Gretchen Felix Jeffery, of Milford, and son Jonathan Briggs Jeffery and his wife Patricia Williams Jeffery of Elkton, Maryland; four grandchildren, William A. JefferyJr. (Jennifer) of Wallingford, Keith Edward Jeffery(Danielle) of North Haven, Joseph Maher Jeffery(Shawn)of West Haven, and D'Arcy Williams Jeffery of Woodmont, Connecticut; nine great-grandchildren, Buddy Jeffery, Veronica Jane Jeffery, Robert James Jeffery, Victoria Jean Jeffery, William Austin Jeffery III, Logan Edward Jeffery, Brooke Maria Jeffery, James Patrick Jeffery, and Charles Adkison Jeffery. She is also survived by her sister Polly Doolittle Mapp of Deland, Florida, numerous nieces and nephews and grandnieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Charlotte Doolittle Wheeler and Jennett Doolittle, and brother Winthrop Topliff Doolittle.
