BARBER James E. Barber, age 48, of Westport, formerly of Bridgeport and New York City, passed away suddenly on Monday, June 18, 2012. Born in Bridgeport, on November 9, 1963, he was the son of Elizabeth Prendergast Barber and the late Ronald "Red" Barber. Jim graduated from St. Ambrose School and Kolbe Cathedral High School (Class of 1981). He attended Southern Connecticut State University and later moved to New York where he attended Columbia and New York Universities. He was formerly employed by Greenpeace, the Margolis Group Home, and Bailey House in New York City, the nations' first response to homelessness among men living with AIDS. He was most recently employed by the Gillespie Center in Westport as the evening shift intake supervisor. Jim loved his time living in New York City. He loved the culture and the diversity of the people, and he had a deep fondness for and was actively involved in daily life in Westport. He had a passion for travel, having extensively visited Europe and especially Ireland. He also traveled the United States from coast to coast several times. He was an accomplished guitarist and collector of guitars. Jim had a fine Irish wit and lived a rich, full life. He was a compassionate man, ready with a shoulder or an ear for all who needed him. He laughed easily and loved deeply and was always kind to animals. He will be deeply missed his his mother Betty; his brothers Ron and Michael Barber; sisters Lynn Erazmus, Patricia Barber (Robert Nickle) and Janet Gunter (Gregory); and his nieces and nephews, Jason Barber, (Sarah); Michelle Nickle; Malik Barber, Kelly and Jack Erazmus; Grady, Kyle, and Caroline Gunter; and his great-niece Emmy Barber. A memorial service will be held for friends and family on Saturday July 14th, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. at the Cyril Mullins Funeral Home 399 White Plains Rd. Trumbull, CT. Friends may call on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will be private.
