Richard Maurice Carpenter of Southport passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at the age of 86. Mr. Carpenter was born in October, 1926 in the family home in Mamaroneck, NY, to parents Amy Clark and Maurice Carpenter.
He graduated from Bellows High School in 1944 and immediately joined the Army and trained to become a paratrooper stationed at Fort Bragg, NC until the war's end. He married his high school sweetheart, Sue Rushmore in 1949. After a stint catching for a minor league baseball team, he graduated from Iona College.
His first job was working for the Daily Times of Mamaroneck as a sports writer, followed by other journalism/PR pursuits at General Dynamics in Groton, United Airlines, the New York Daily News, and Young & Rubicam all in New York City. He established and for many years ran his own agency, Dick Carpenter and Associates. During this time, he created and ran the Super Bowl Celebrity Golf Tournaments that were played annually for many years.
He loved Manhattan and always said it was the center of the world. He also loved the game of golf, the arts, Paris, and the Pequot Library. He was an active member of the Y's Men of Westport.
He adored his family and was a devoted father, brother, uncle, and a loving husband to his wife Sue. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Audrey Sullivan of Crossville, Tennessee; his daughters Donna Brooks (Roy) of Florida, Claudia Carpenter of London, UK, and Jan Carpenter (John) of Southport; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Services are private and under the direction of the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Rd. in Fairfield Center.
