Lisa Cissel Obituary

Cissel, Lisa Robbins.
Lisa Robbins Cissel, 55, passed away on December 13, 2012 surrounded by her family in her childhood Fairfield, CT home after a valiant fight against multiple myeloma. For Lisa her family was the single most important part of her life, followed by her love for the natural world, developed as a child exploring the woods, fields and ponds of northern Fairfield.Lisa attended Timothy Dwight School, graduating from Greens Farms Academy in 1975 and St Lawrence University in 1979. She taught science and history for 13 years at GFA, where her husband John also worked and all three of their children - Ellie, Katherine and Margaret - were educated. Lisa founded her own preschool and summer camp, Discoveries, and led a preschool program at Dutchess Day School. She launched three different elementary school science programs in as many schools - Fairfield Country Day, Greens Farms Academy and Harbor Country Day School. Her passion for nature was boundless; her love for working with children both magical and inspiring. She loved walking through the woods and on the beach with her family and dog, Mosey, telling stories and sports of all kinds. She is survived by her husband John, daughters Ellie, Katherine and Margaret, her parents Joan and Walter Robbins, sisters Claire Miner and Anne Mandeville-Long, and brothers Tucker, Jonathan and Peter Robbins, as well as many nephews, nieces, in-laws and friends. Memorial services will be held at St Timothy's Episcopal Church in Fairfield on Thursday December 20, 2012 at 11:00 a.m., and contributions can be made in lieu of flowers to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation at http://support.themmrf.org/goto/lisa

Lisa was my roomate and great friend at St. Lawrence. Somehow, we lost touch after graduation until just 4 months ago when I got a "Hamilton College Welcome to Incoming Freshman Parents" email from someone named Martha Robbins of Connecticut. Through a series of email exchanges, her relationship to Lisa was revealed and she put us in touch with each other. It felt SO GOOD to begin the 33 year "catch up" with Lisa. I didn't know about her illness and she had way too much else to tell me. Thoughtfully, Martha emailed me yesterday (even though we have never met in person) to let me know of Lisa's passing. This brief reconnection was meant to be and has reminded me of so many fun, funny, rich conversations and experiences that we shared at SLU. I am so sorry that life was cut short for her but it is clear that it was a very full and giving one. My warmest wishes to her family, Meredyth Armitage

Knowing Lisa for ever as many of us have, the service for her was the best ever. As awkward as it sounds to come out of a funeral and say "wasn't that great!" I have to say that each of the the 3 kids and the everyone elso who spoke were "spot on" as they say. It was the first time I felt the positive presense of a person, Lisa, in the church with us all. As sad as her passing was, the energy she had was present through the passion of each speaker. She'll always be missed but never forgotten. Take a walk and she'll be there. My best to John and their children who were closest to her.

John & The Girls,
I first met Lisa 40 years ago as a member of my homeroom '71/'72. Over the years the 5 of us have bonded in various ways. For now, let me say that it was a privileged being at her funeral; the memories shared on Thursday highlighted the LOVE that she shared with all who knew her. We are all better people having experienced her LOVE! God has blessed the 4 of you for being with her on a daily basis! It was fitting that YOU and others shared her life with so many, many people that day. Take Care ...

She wanted me to call her Lisa instead of Mrs. Cissel and to my son, Jonathan (Jonny) she was known as his beloved Mrs.Cissel. Jonny and I were blessed to have Lisa in our lives, a very caring and warm human being with a loving smile. She spent afternoons with Jonny nurturing, teaching, and caring for him while I worked. I knew my son was in great hands. She would say he's the son she didn't have and it was her pleasure. She baked cookies and banana bread for him and they played games as well. He received such love from her, it was an amazing gift for him. He said a prayer for her everyday in school and before he went to bed at night when he found out she was ill. I found out today that Lisa is no longer with us in body and it was devastating to break the news to him. As a mother and a nurse, I didn't know how to tell him . I decided to go to church and explain to him that his loving Mrs. Cissel is in heaven looking down on him. He said a prayer and lit a candle. Having her in our lives was truly a blessing for my son and myself. I'm at ease knowing that she's at peace. We love you Lisa and you will forever be in our hearts and memories. Our prayers are with John and your beautiful girls.
