Sobel, Sidney
Sidney Sobel, 96, Stratford, CT, passed away on February 10, 2013 at Bridgeport Hospital. Born May 28, 1916 in Norwich, CT, he was the son of the late Buna and Rabbi Samuel Sobel. He was kind and caring; a gentleman as well as a gentle man who loved his family deeply. He loved to sing, to laugh, and most importantly, he loved to make others laugh. He was passionate and knowledgeable about music, dance, theater and movies. He graduated from Harding High School in Bridgeport and the CT School of Pharmacy before joining the Army in 1941. During World War II he served for three years in the medical corps in New Guinea where he earned a Bronze Star. After the war he was employed for many years as a pharmacist and later worked for Aerosol Techniques, Inc. of Bridgeport.
He was a founding member of the Westport fellowship of the Ethical Culture Society and was an active supporter of local and national civil rights and anti-war organizations during the 60's. Survivors include a son, Leigh Sobel and his wife, Bernadette; a daughter, Wendy Sobel; three grandchildren, Kieran, Evan and Brian; his former wife, Joan Munley, his nieces, Phyllis Epstein and Ruth Martin, and numerous great nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Blanche, his brother Louis, his former wife, Betty (Saltman) and his nephew, David Sobel. The family would also like to extend their thanks and gratitude to his dearest friend, Joy Chavent and to the staff at Lord Chamberlain Manor and Emeritus at Woodbridge for their love, caring and support. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the "Brady Center To Prevent Gun Violence" 1225 Eye Street, NW, Suite 1100, Washington, DC 20005 or online at: www.bradycenter.org
