Hillman, Fay H.
Fay H. Hillman, Born in Monroe, CT on Feb 9, 1921, to Fanny (Schmidt) and Bradford Hawley, she was graduated from Bassick High School in Bridgeport in 1936, then Booth and Bayliss Business College, also in Bridgeport. She then did clerical work for attorney Jay K. Bradley and Judge Raymond E. Baldwin who went on to be Govenor of Connecticut and a US Senator.
Fay was married in 1942 to Virgil R. Hillman, a young man from Illinois farm country who came East to join the Navy and was stationed at the Naval base in New London, CT. Their wedding took place on Halloween at her parent's home on the eve of Virgil's departure to serve on a diesel submarine in World War II.
Their first daughter Cheryl was born at the end of the war in 1945, and they took up dairy farming in Greenwich, CT where second daughter Lynn was born in 1948. They later bought a farm of their own not far from Fay's girlhood home and raised registered Jersey Cattle. Fay became leader of 2 4-H Clubs as her girls were growing up; she taught homemaking skills and dressmaking, and the Jersey calves appeared at 4-H shows. In 1959 the Hillman family moved to a larger farm in West Gorham, Maine. While the girls attended high school and college, Fay worked as bookkeeper for the Gorham School Department in the superintendent's office. In 1962 a son, Charles, was born, and Fay started motherhood anew as she continued working to put the girls through college. Fay and Virgil eventually sold their farm and moved to Standish, ME. Fay was active in the Eastern Star, and the Standish Historical Society. She took up oil painting and turned out several nice works of art. After Virgil passed away in 1993, Fay remained active in church and community activities. She spent her last years at Chuck's home and passed away peacefully on April 12th 2013. She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Hillman and Lynn Furstrand, her son, Charles (Chuck) Hillman, former daughter-in-law, Penny Hanson, her granddaughter, Paige Hillman, grandson Robert Hillman, her sister, Julia Ann Blauvelt, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Dolby & Dorr Funeral Chapel. Online condolences may be sent www.dolbyfuneralchapels.com
