Vaporis, Pierre R.
Captain Pierre R. Vaporis, retired, age 84, beloved husband of June Collins Vaporis of Fairfield, passed away peacefully after a long illness in Cambridge Manor on November 7, 2013. In addition to his devoted wife, June, Pierre will be remembered by his children, Wayne Vaporis of East Haven; Craig Vaporis of Fairfield; Drew Vaporis and his wife Anna of Fairfield; his cherished grandchildren, Christy and Cole Vaporis; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Todd; his parents, Pierre D. and Anne Roth Vaporis, and one brother, Rene. Born and raised in the Black Rock section of Bridgeport, he resided in Fairfield for 54 years. A 1948 graduate of Bassick High School, Pierre was an extraordinary athlete who loved playing quarterback and pitched for his school teams. He joined the Eighth Army Ranger Company and rose through the ranks while serving in the Korean War. He continued his career in the military until retiring in 1971 at the rank of Captain. He was recognized with numerous medals including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for Valor. Additionally, Pierre worked as a salesperson for several local Volkswagen dealerships and seasonally served the Town of Fairfield as a life guard/ swim instructor at Jennings Beach. As a life guard, Pierre came to know many of his lifelong friends. While he projected a strong, tough exterior, Pierre was truly a warm, caring individual. He loved his wife, children, and grandchildren immensely. He also had a soft spot for all animals, and would find it hard to resist bringing strays home to nurture. All services for Pierre will be private. He will be laid to rest with full military honor in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts celebrating his life may be directed to either: The National Ranger Memorial Foundation, Inc. (www.rangermemorial.org) PO Box 53369, Fort Benning, GA 31995, or Save Our Strays, Inc.(www.saveourstraysinc.petfinder.com) 1677 Post Road East, Westport, CT 06880.
