Rice, Kathleen M.
Kathleen Mary Rice, age 90, of Southport, died on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 in St. Vincent's Medical Center surrounded by her family. She was the wife of Frank J. Rice. Kathleen was born on March 19, 1923 in her grandfather's house [The Boorman House] in Mauston, Wisconsin. She was predeceased by her parents Eileen (Powers) and William D. Ryan. Kathleen grew up in Madison, WI. She attended Edgewood High School and The University of Wisconsin where she earned a degree in Home Economics Education with a minor in mathematics. After teaching in the Milwaukee School System for ten years she accepted a teaching position in Home Economics at the University of Missouri, where she met her husband. Mrs. Rice later received her Masters Degree in Education from Fairfield University. In addition to her husband she is survived by seven children, Marilyn, Andy and his wife Kathy, Janet and her husband Mike, Bill, Thomas and his wife Deborah, Cassie, David and his wife Suzanne; eleven grandchildren, Mariel (Brown) Walters, Michaela (Brown) Morris, Kathleen Brown, Daniel Brown, Kristina Rice, Melanie Rice, Rebecca Rice, Kyle Rice, Phillip Rice, Bryan DiGiovanni and Deanna DiGiovanni and two great-grandchildren, Teaghan Walters and Payton Walters. Kathleen taught Home Economics for many years at Roger Ludlowe High School and Tomlinson Middle School. She was active in community activities such as 4-H and Cub Scouts, St. Thomas Church Religious Education and the Fairfield Senior Center. She also served on the Grasmere Eldercare Building Committee. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, December 7, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. meeting directly at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 1719 Post Road, Fairfield. Interment will follow in Willowbrook Cemetery, Westport. Friends may call Friday from 4-8 p.m. in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield. I remember him as "Dr. Bourque" from my days of teaching in Fairfield. He was regarded by all as a highly intelligent and dedicated educator, but reading his obituary reveals that he was much, much more. Rest in peace, Dr. Bourque. The world will miss you.

Your mother will be truly missed. I have been blessed to have known your family for over 30 years. While living in Connecticut, I was able to attend many of the family celebrations. I always felt the love and the closenesss your family shared and always felt it extended to me and my family.
