Rupert Hanan Obituary

Hanan, Rupert G.
Rupert Guy Hanan, Guy to those who knew him, died, unexpectedly, July 5, 2014, in Fairfield, CT. He is survived by his wife Iris, his mother Anneliese, his daughters Elizabeth and Joanna, his stepson Sacha, and his son-in-law Jon. Memorial services to honor and celebrate his life were held Wednesday, July 9 in Fairfield, CT. Guy was born August 26, 1952 in Epping, England to Anneliese and Pat Hanan. He spent the first ten years of his life in England before emigrating with his family to Palo Alto, CA where his father accepted a position with Stanford University. Guy partook of all the university had to offer to faculty children and developed an enduring tie with the university for his remaining years, especially his love for following and cheering on his favorite Stanford sports teams. His senior year in high school his father moved the family to Cambridge, MA in order to join the faculty at Harvard University. Guy longed to be in CA and returned to Stanford as an undergraduate student. After he graduated, he worked for a while in the purchasing department at Stanford, soon deciding to go to business school. He returned to Cambridge, MA and attended Harvard's business school. Following his two years there he was employed at various companies in San Diego and Texas, spending much of his career as a consultant practicing out of CT. Guy was much more than his career. He was erudite and clever, well- spoken and well- read. His family and friends loved him for his selflessness, humanity, and bad jokes. His colleagues respected him for his steadfastness, wisdom, evenhandedness and intelligence. He saw himself as a problem solver. Guy became a talented photographer amassing thousands of pictures of flowers, butterflies, turtles, deer, and birds. He was a soft, gentle, considerate and kind man. He had an incredibly strong sense of duty and honor and commitment to his family. He had a quick wit and had great fun memorizing ridiculously insipid, silly jokes. Every week he would curate videos, articles, cartoons and pictures from the Guardian, the New Zealand Herald and other media and customize a unique assortment of links for each family member. He cared deeply about his aging parents, losing his father only 2 months prior to his own passing. He cared deeply about his children and his wife, taking care at a distance for fear of being too intrusive. He seemed intent on leaving a gentle footprint on this earth, not wanting to call attention to himself. He took pride in nursing orchids back to health, and rescuing plants that weren't thriving. He was a man of few words, his silence often belying the depth of his feelings. He had hopes of travelling once he retired. Those dreams are now dashed but he lives on in our memories and thoughts each and every day. We are so sad to have to continue our lives without him and miss him terribly.

What a beautiful obituary for Guy. I was a friend of his at Stanford where I knew Guy both as a fellow Econ major and a Junipero Dorm-mate. I just now found out about his death from a fellow Junipero-ite who managed to track me down b/c a Junipero reunion is being planned. Guy was one of the first people I asked about, and I was so sorry to learn of his death. I think Guy was lucky to have found you, Iris (assuming that you wrote his obituary); you really 'got' and appreciated him. He was quiet and funny and sweet and gentle. At some point - I think it was summer during college, but it's possible it was after graduation, I visited Guy at his family home in MA, meeting his parents. It is sad he died so young. It must have been extremely hard for his Mom, losing her husband and her child in such a short timespan. I hope you and your daughters and son are faring well. I will think of Guy fondly and with wistfulness at the upcoming reunion, wishing I'd had the chance to see him one more time. All my best.
