Attorney Serge George Mihaly, age 80, of Trumbull, passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2014 in the Connecticut Hospice in Branford with his loving family at his side. Born in Stratford on Sunday, October 29, 1933 to the late Reverend Joseph and Pani Gizella (Steinhous) Mihaly he remained a life long area resident. He was the widower of the late Elizabeth Chornock Mihaly and Lillian Zysk Mihaly and a veteran of the United States Army's 370th Armored Infantry Battalion, 11 Airborne Division serving from 1956-1958. He graduated Warren Harding High School in Bridgeport, CT in 1951 Magna Cum Laude, received his B.A. from New York University, Cum Laude in 1954, and under a scholarship program received his LLB degree from the New York University School of Law in 1956. Mr. Mihaly was admitted to the Connecticut and Bridgeport Bar Associations, member of the American Trial Lawyers Association and was a recognized expert on Connecticut Workmen's Compensation Law. He served as the Chairman of the Trumbull Democratic Town Committee from 1967 to approximately 1972 organizing the campaign for the first Democrat candidate to be elected to the position of mayor in 14 years. He was a candidate for the Connecticut Assembly; served on the Democratic State platform committee in 1970 and in 1974, was a member of the Rules Committee for the Democratic State Central Committee, Commissioner for the Rocky Hill Veterans Home and Hospital, a Trumbull Police Commissioner, member of the Stratford Gun Collectors Association and the National Rifle Association. He was also a member of the Fairfield County Fish and Game club, the New England Antique Arms Society, Ye Connecticut Gun Guild, the 'Little Club' and former member of the Connecticut State Police Auxiliary. He was a Trustee of the Nichols Improvement Association, founder and past President of the Trumbull Historical Society, Past President of the Trumbull Lions Club, served as the president of the American Carpatho Russian Youth organization and counsel to the Slovak Gymnastics Union Sokol. Mr. Mihaly was a member of the St' John the Baptist Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church on Broadbridge Avenue in Stratford, CT. He loved to hunt, fish and spend time with family and friends. Survivors include his loving children, Serge Mihaly, Jr of Wallingford, Very Reverend Luke Mihaly and his wife Pani Bethany of Danbury and Matthew Mihaly and his wife Michelle of Trumbull, his stepchildren John and Jason Vargovchik, his beloved grandchildren Zachariah, Nicholas and his wife Stacey, Anastasia, Christopher, Matthew Jr., Robert and Elena, a great-grandson Cyril, step grandchildren, John and Michael Caiazzo, his devoted brother and sisters, Orestes Mihaly and his wife Katarina of Armonk, NY, Ilona Decerbo and her husband Thomas of Trumbull and Marion Fallon of Trumbull, several nieces and nephews. A Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 9:00am in St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church; 1240 Broadbridge Avenue; Stratford Interment with Full Military Honors will take place in St. John's Cemetery Stratford.
