John Steers Obituary

Steers, John G.
John Gordon Steers, age 41 of Fairfield, Connecticut, beloved husband of Katharine (Kate) Colangelo Steers and loving father of Cass and Teagan Steers, passed away Friday, September 25, 2015 following a valiant fight with melanoma. Raised in Fairfield, John was educated at Fairfield Country Day School, Fairfield College Preparatory School and received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of South Carolina. John enjoyed traveling, ultimately visiting 49 states, after which he began his career in the financial industry. A tremendously talented athlete, he was a nationally ranked tennis player, an avid golfer and loved everything to do with fishing, hunting and the great outdoors. John found the love of his life when he met Kate and became an involved father and an active participant in his girls' activities. John had a strong love of family, and shared a very close relationship with his sister and his parents, with special admiration for his dad. In addition to his devoted wife and children, John is survived by his parents, Roger and Patricia Steers of Napa, CA, formerly of Fairfield; a sister, Lesley O'Connell and her husband Joseph of Westport, and his faithful Labrador, Otis. A memorial service celebrating John's life will be held Thursday, October 8, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Greenfield Hill Congregational Church 1045 Old Academy Road, Fairfield. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Yale University with the Brain Metastasis Fund at Yale annotated in the memo (c/o Erin Shreve Yale School of Medicine P.O. I am so sorry about our loss. John was a great friend in high school and I have many fond memories of our youth. His athleticism on the tennis court, his friendliness to everyone, the remodeled (and very cool) Land Cruiser he loved working on - these are just some of the great memories that come to mind. John was always a gentleman, and it's impressive given he was an athlete at such a young age. It never got to his head. He treated everyone very kindly, and was fun to be around. I will miss him dearly, and am sending love and prayers to his family and friends.

Kate, and family, our thoughts and prayers are with you all through this time of sorrow. Although we never met John, I feel like we knew him through our conversations. Wishing your memories will bring you all peace and smiles and laughter in time as you remember John and share in those times. Heaven gained an angel and you have gained a guardian angel.. I am here for you for whatever you need. In love and peace. Jenn

John was a great competitor on the court but an even better person to hang out with off it! He made growing up in junior tennis a fun journey for all of us in the NELTA world. My thoughts and prayers are with his family!

May the Lord give you peace and understanding in this difficult time. John was an extraordinary person who always came into the golf shop with a smile on his face. I will certainly miss his visits to Orchid.

My prayers and sincere condolences to Kate and the entire Steers family. I have fond memories of John during his time at Fairfield Prep. I remember John as a very bright and vibrant young man. We shared many conversations, mostly about... what else?...tennis! I life well-lived, albeit sadly much too short. To quote the Prep fight song..."We may laugh, we may cry, but we never say die!" May he rest in peace.

I hadn't seen John since high school but my memories of him are great. He was a true class act back then when the rest of us weren't. My heart goes out to John's family.

Some lives are cut too short, as John's was.
In reflecting, I cherish the time I spoke with John within the last couple of years when he joined CC of F, thinking of his high school years including the tutoring and being brought up to date on his extended family: Truly a blessing.
With sincere sympathy to all the Steers.
