Schlegel, Kenneth A.
Kenneth Alan Schlegel, 56, of Meriden Connecticut passed away on October 3, 2015 at his home after a long struggle with depression.
Ken was born December 2, 1958 in Shelton Ct. He was a graduate of Western Connecticut State University. As a young man Ken was a volunteer member of the ECHO hose Fire Department in Shelton. He served as fire fighter in the fire at the 1975 Sponge Rubber Products plant in downtown Shelton. He continued in a public service capacity as an EMT serving on several ambulances services in the Naugatuck Valley area. After college, Ken worked as a security officer at Hartford Hospital where he also served as one of the original team of dispatchers for the Lifestar Air Ambulance service. Ken also worked at Sikorsky Aircraft for many years where he received awards for outstanding service. Most recently he was pleased to be working with many new friends at Murphy Security.
Ken will be remembered for his kindness to friends and neighbors, for being an avid dog lover, for his photography, for his humor, honor, generosity and integrity, for his love of guitar playing and music. He proudly served as Grand Poobah for his Revolutionary friends and hosted the "Rev Cook-off "in his home for many years. Ken was also a lifelong motorcycle enthusiast and a wonderful cook.
Ken is survived by his mother Mrs. Sandra (Webster) Kopec and her husband Mitchell, his father Ronald G. Schlegel and his wife Charlotte, his beloved brother Peter R. Schlegel and many cousins and friends. He also leaves behind Susan Malo, his lifelong friend and former wife of 27 years. He was predeceased by his beloved German Shorthaired Pointers (GSP) Otto, Bruno and Cisco.
His family is grateful for the friends who stood by him during his difficult struggles. Ken will be forever in our hearts and remembered fondly for his many kind gestures throughout his life.
A celebration of Ken's life will be held on Saturday November 14th at Nomads 100 Bidwell Road, South Windsor, CT at 12 p.m. Friends and family are welcome to attend and share their stories.
An additional memorial service will be held at Salem Lutheran Church, 3160 Park Ave. Bridgeport, CT 06604 at later date to be announced.

I was touched by Kenneth's story. Although I did not know him, I want to say what a noble life...constrained by insidious depression yet doing everything by the book and giving of himself in life and death situations as a fire fighter. I know depression too, and I envy his energy and profound commitment to others.
