Dennis Wasson Obituary

Wasson, Dennis MD.
Dennis Wasson, MD of Fairfield, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones on February 1, 2016. He was 82 years old and is survived by his loving wife Ellen, and their four children: Tara and husband Jeff Moxham, Roger, Ann and husband Geoffrey Coley, Katherine and husband Nicholas Morris, all in whom he felt love and pride. He, known as "Poppy", leaves behind seven beloved grandchildren: Hannah of Brookfield, CT; Kassie, Niki, Gillian of New York City; Nicholas, Jonathan, Caroline of Fairfield, CT. He also leaves behind a sister: Joy Riley of Pemberton, NJ. Dr. Wasson was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on October 15, 1933 to Samuel and Caroline Wasson. He was predeceased by his brother, William and sister, Maureen Jinks, both of Belfast, Northern Ireland. After attending Belfast Royal Academy, he earned his medical degree from Queens University, Belfast in 1957. He completed his surgical internship and residency at Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast and Norwalk Hospital, CT. He continued his training at Harvard Medical School, MA having earned a Surgical Research Fellowship in 1964. After completing his training, he worked in private practice that continued for 50 years. Dennis held many positions at Bridgeport Hospital including Chief of Staff, Chairman of the Medical Executive Committee and was Chief of General Surgery for nearly a decade. He was an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine. After being awarded Teacher of the Year many times throughout his career, The Dennis Wasson, MD Award for Outstanding Performance in Surgical Residency was initiated in 2010 and he was granted Honorary Staff Status at Bridgeport Hospital. Dennis Wasson was known as an excellent and experienced surgeon who was as dedicated to practicing surgery as he was to teaching it. He was a deeply compassionate doctor who devoted his life to caring for his patients and their families. Dr. Wasson's family, including his grandchildren were the most important thing in his life. In addition, his talent for playing the piano and his love of music began at age five under the nurturing care of his musically talented mother. He was a chorister at Saint Ann's Cathedral, Belfast for most of his youth and became a brilliant pianist who's deep repertoire covered all genres. He spent his life playing endlessly for himself but what brought him the most joy, was sharing his gift with family and friends. Equal to his love of music was his indefatigable quest for knowledge. He was veracious reader and was known to many as a true polymath. Dennis touched so many people, whether directly or indirectly with his calm demeanor and strong and steady hands. He was a source of quiet wisdom, comfort and security to so many. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, patients and colleagues. The funeral will be held at Trinity Church, 651 Pequot Avenue, Southport, CT on Saturday, February 20th at 1:00 pm. Contributions in Dennis's memory may be made to Bridgeport Hospital Department of Surgery Educational Fund, PO Box 5000, Bridgeport, CT 06610 or to Trinity Episcopal Church Southport. Dear Wasson family,
My deepest condolences to your entire family at this most sorrowful time. Dr. Wasson was the epitomy of compassion, kindness, caring and professionalism. He was truly a one-of-a kind skilled surgeon who treated his patients with the utmost of care and respect. I feel priviledged to have worked with him in the operating room and be privy to his gentle teaching style and expert skill as well as his sharing of stories of Ireland and family. He enjoyed attending Thursday morning conferences at the hospital and was truly admired and revered by all for his infinite contributions and expertise. As for all who had the opportunity to know him, he will be missed beyond expression. He was a very special man indeeda legend.

To the Wasson Family: Was very sorry to hear of the passing of dear Dr. Wasson. He was my doctor for many years, even after I moved to up-state NY. I would return to his gentle care for many years. There has never been a more caring person, skilled doctor and wonderful human being. He was with me through all of my many surgeries (I would not allow anyone else near me) and he was always there, morning and night and never failed to let my family know how I was doing. He was a great, great person. I know he will be missed by many, but by his family most of all. I feel blessed to have known him and have him care for me.

I was a patient of Dr. Wasson in the mid 80's. I had an ongoing problem even when testing proved negative. Dr. Wasson listened to my concerns, and he said he listened to women intuition. Before surgery, he said to me " I'm going to look pretty silly if nothing is wrong" I assured him he would not look "silly". We were right problem was undetected in testing. He was always ready to listen to his patients concerns. We have all lost a a wonderful surgeon, and friend. My condolences to his family.

February 10, 2016

To the family of Dr. Wasson,
My family and I offer our deepest condolences on the passing of Dr. Wasson. He took care of my Mom and helped her live another 9 years after surgery for colon cancer. For a lady who never liked going to the doctor, she was very sad when Dr. Wasson told her that she no longer needed to be seen as she had healed so well. She truly missed him and his gentle, patient and enduring personality. She wanted to live long enough to see her granddaughter graduate from high school and did so, along with seeing her graduate from college and one of her grandsons from high school. I was honored to not only have him care for my Mom, but as a graduate and a former nurse at Bridgeport Hospital, the opportunity to work with him and learn from him. May God comfort you in your time of sorrow and may his memory be eternal. Judy Turaj RN and family

I was one of Dr. Wasson's patients and he had such command and respect from other dr and colleagues when he was on duty. He reassured me when i had surgery twice with him and I felt like I was in God's Hands when he took care of me. Thank you always for your talents. I am whole today and well because of your surgical craft. He seemed like a most gentle man and kind, never in a hurry-always tried to reassure me and that was important. I wish more doctors were like him or had been in his presence to know how to handle any patient thoughtfully. My condolences to his family. Best. Ann Caldwell/Trumbull, Ct

Dr. Wasson was to me the epitome of the caring surgeon and respected colleague. In all my years of practice I have never met a physician who exemplified the ideals of the profession more than he. I know I speak for many; he was the kind of man who we all hope to be one day.

To Ellen and all the Wasson family. We are all very sad to hear the news that Dennis has passed. He brought great joy and fun when he would visit us all in Newtownards Northern Ireland. I always just thought he was another one of Dad's brothers so I used to say uncle Dennis is here and then crowd around the piano with excitement to hear great music played. Dinner parties became magical with Dennis, always a smile a story and then music. Deepest sympathies to you all thinking of you on these very difficult days.
Much love to all
