Jesus "Chuy" Gutierrez, 93, of San Jose Boulevard, Carlsbad, N.M., passed away Friday, June 21, 2013, at Lakeview Christian Home.
Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. today (June 25) at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. A memorial service is scheduled for 7 p.m. today at Oasis Christian Fellowship with Pastor John Burke officiating. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at Oasis Christian Fellowship with Pastor Albert Alvarez officiating. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, N.M. Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard will provide military honors. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Jesus "Chuy" Gutierrez was born Feb. 21, 1920, in Buena Vista, Texas, to Jesus and Josefa (Olivas) Gutierrez. He attended Carlsbad Schools. Chuy served in the U.S. Army for three years. On Dec. 17, 1994, he married Bertha Cortez in Carlsbad. For 44 years, Chuy worked as a foreman for various construction companies. He was a member of Worldwide Mission Builders, Mexico Church Builders of Oasis Christian Fellowship, and a member of Oasis Christian Fellowship. Chuy enjoyed gardening, visiting with his family and friends, and sitting on his front porch waving at his neighbors as they drove by.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Pat Gutierrez (1987); three brothers; five sisters; daughter, Mary Helen Garavito; grandchildren: Michael Garavito and Jeremy Garavito; and great-great-grandchild, Jayce Palma.
Survivors are his wife, Bertha Cortez Gutierrez of Carlsbad, N.M.; daughters: Margie Ruiz and Nellie Urmston, both of Carlsbad, N.M.; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Patty Rodriguez, Robert Ruiz, Denise Dunn, Doreen Johnson, Michelle London and Daniel Urmston. Honorary pallbearers are Scott London, Rudy Estrada, Ray Doporto, Robert Ruiz Sr. and Salvador Anaya. Condolences may be expressed at dentonwood.com.
