Herbert C. "Herb" Bindel(1923 - 2014)

Herbert "Herb" Bindel, 91, of East Wood Ave., passed away on Monday, July 28, 2014, at his home. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday (Aug. 8) at St. Edward Catholic Church. Father Pasala Hruday Kumar will be the celebrant. Interment will follow at Sunset Gardens Memorial Park. Rosary and Wake will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday (Aug. 7) at St. Edward Catholic Church. Herbert C. Bindel was born on July 27, 1923, to William J. Bindel and Mary (Boes) Bindel. He married Gytha P. "Penny" Morris on June 6, 1946, here in Carlsbad, and they had recently celebrated 68 years together.
Herb was a dairy farmer; milking 125 head of cows as well as farming his dad's farm when he got married.
He served 30 years on the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service as a community and county member. He also served a two-year term as county committeeman.
He was chairman of the Draft Board until it ended and served on the Planning and Zoning when it began. Herb served on the boards of SWIG Cotton, Cotton Incorporated and the National Cotton Council.
He was District Deputy and Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and was a life member of the Elks Club and a life member of St. Edward Catholic Church.
He enjoyed family, especially the grand and great-grandchildren, and he loved being a farmer. All who knew him will remember his sense of humor. He loved God and was a perfect example of strength, courage, understanding, endurance, patience, and humility.
Herb was preceded in death by: his parents; children: Morris Lee, William (Bill), Steven and Kathy; son-in law, Bill Heskett and great-grandson, Luke Cline; sisters: Sister Dorothy Bindel, Agnes Sullivan, Thelma Mettlach and Wilma Richards.
He is survived by his wife Penny Bindel of the family home; children: Norma Lucero of Albuquerque and Carlsbad, Anna Heskett of Albuquerque; Dottie Driscoll of Carlsbad; Herbert Jr, (Pete) Bindel and wife JoDet of Hayworth, Calif., Robert Bindel of Carlsbad, Larry Bindel of San Antonio, Texas, Chris Bindel of American Fork, Utah, James Bindel and, wife Susie of Carlsbad, Bernie Tapp of Amarillo, Texas, Francis Bindel and wife Lizabeth of Sugarland, Texas; sisters: Madelene Ferguson of Carlsbad and Mary Jo Halfen of Lakewood, Colo.; 30 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be grandsons: Mike Driscoll, Dustyn Bindel, Charles Bindel, David Bindel, Steve Bindel, Paul Bindel, David Tapp, Justin Bindel, Matthew Bindel and Jason Bindel.
Honorary Pallbearers are grandsons: Scott Barber, Christian Bindel, John Bindel, Daniel Bindel, William Henderson, Will Fortenberry and Trevor Bindel.
