Melvin N Kartchner

Melvin N. Kartchner, 83, of Carter Place, passed away Sunday, June 16, 2013, at Carlsbad Medical Center. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 20, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on North Mesa Street. Bishop Steve McCutcheon, Carlsbad Caverns Ward, will officiate. Military honors will be performed by the Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard. Services are entrusted to West Funeral Home. Melvin Neil Kartchner was born to Melvin W. and Irma G. (Wakefield) Kartchner on July 14, 1929, in Winslow, Ariz. He moved to Carlsbad as a small child and graduated from Carlsbad High School in the Class of 1948.
Melvin and Anita Beasley Kartchner were married April 9, 1981, in Carlsbad. He worked for IMCC for more than 35 years as an instrument technician prior to his retirement in 1986.
While in high school, he loved playing football. He was a life member of B.P.O.E. No. 1558 and was a member of The Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Jack Kartchner.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Anita; children: Rodney Kartchner of Carlsbad and Nelva Jo Sansing of San Antonio, Texas; stepchildren: Sara Angell of Concord, N.H., Steve Angell and John Angell, both of Carlsbad; brothers: Ned Kartchner of Ridgecrest, Calif., and Rex Kartchner of Roswell, N.M.; sisters: Nora Longsine of Clanton, Ala., and Judy Kartchner of Carlsbad; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
