Tommie B. Lewis, 80, of Valverde Street, passed away Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, at his home. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at the West Funeral Home Chapel. Robert Ellis of Artesia will officiate assisted by Leonard Caswell of Carlsbad. Military honors will be performed by the Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard. Tommie Barnett Lewis was born to Thomas Edward and Grace Irene (Crawford) Lewis April 12, 1933, in Alix, Ark. He moved along with his family to Rock Springs, Wyo., and remained there until joining the U.S. Army in 1953. He served for two years and was a corporal at the time of his transfer to the Army Reserve in 1955.
Tommie and Virginia Marie (Daley) Lewis were married Nov. 2, 1951, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Tommie worked for National Potash from 1958 until 1994. During this time, he also owned and operated Carlsbad Pest Control. He then went to work at the WIPP site, where he worked during the construction phase.
Tommie loved hunting, fishing and reloading but most of all he loved to trade. He was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and a lifetime member of Carlsbad Elk's Lodge No. 1558.
He is preceded in death by his wife; parents; sons: Ronald L. and Jeffrey Lewis; and brother, Robert Lewis.
Tommie is survived by children: Thomas Lewis of Mayhill, N.M., Steve Lewis, Francis "Scott" Lewis and Becky Lewis, all of Carlsbad; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
