Clara Mae (Smith) Marks Obituary
Clara Mae Marks passed away on Feb. 2, 2014. Born to Duard Othal Smith and Rubye Gladis Webb Smith at Big Spring, Texas on Oct. 18, 1934, she lived in Forsan, Texas, until the World War II years, when the family moved to Mobile, Alabama, so her father could work in the shipyards. She moved to Denver City, Texas, in 1944; Eunice, New Mexico, in 1946 and then to Snyder, Texas, in 1950, finishing high school in 1953. She married Morris H. Gauntt in Sept. of 1952.
Her first job was in Houston, Texas, at M. D. Anderson Tumor Research Center. She worked there when the first cobalt cancer treatment was used. She and her husband returned to Snyder where they helped her mother and father in his welding business. Her father died in April of 1955 and her mother in March of 1968. She ran the welding business until 1974 having expanded to Lovington, New Mexico, in 1958 and opening an office in Carlsbad, New Mexico, in 1972. She sold the welding business in 1974 and continued her work career with Duval, National Potash Mine, and Amax. She medically retired in 1990 after 22 years of working in the mines as a continuous miner and shuttle car operator.
She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by brother Carl Smith; daughter, Donna Gauntt Price; sons, Ricky Gauntt, Morris Gauntt, and Michael Marks. She has nine grandchildren: Steven Hutchens, Chrissy Gauntt Montes, Stefanie Hutchens, Brandon Gauntt, Joshua Gauntt, Dylan Gauntt, Tyler Gauntt, Michelle Butler and Mitchell Butler. She has seven great grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
New Hope Funeral Home, 500 East Highway 80, Sunnyvale, Texas, is handling funeral arrangements. She will be buried at Hillside Memorial Gardens, 2834 Highway 208 in Snyder, Texas, at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, near her parents and grandparents.
