1929 - 2010 Obituary Condolences
David N. Estes Jr. Obituary
Funeral services for David Estes, 80, of Roswell will be held at 10 a.m. today (June 15) at Grace Community Church in Roswell with Pastor Rick Hale officiating. David passed away Wednesday, June 9, 2010.
Life began for David N. Estes Jr. on Nov. 6, 1929, in Carlsbad, N.M. He was born prematurely during a snowstorm to David N. Estes Sr., and his young wife Betty. He married his wife Jane on April 5, 1953, in Portales, N.M. they were married 57 short years. Jane was his best friend and they were inseparable. David had a true servant's heart. Throughout his years he volunteered with many organizations, too many to name them all. A few of his favorites were the 4-H youth program, Y Indian Guides, Youth Camps, KRPV-TV (especially in the early years) and Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship. Another that was very dear to his heart was the Prison Ministries that he was instrumental in starting in the Roswell area. Through it all, the thing he would want you to gain from his life is that he would want you to know his best friend – Jesus. With Him, you can survive and overcome.
David is survived by his wife, Jane, of the family home; one daughter, Leona Avent and her husband, Scott of Roswell; nine grandchildren: Crystal, Kersanda, Mary, Brandon, Jessica and David D. Estes, Brian, Brent and Shane Stevenson; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters: June Lackey and her husband, Jerry and Peggy Titus and her husband, Richard; numerous nieces and nephews; and his very special friend, "Jesus Christ."
He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Moore; his stepfather, Roy Moore; his father, David Neal Estes Sr.; one brother, Samuel Estes; one sister, Hazel Sanders; one son, David Timothy Estes; and one granddaughter, Sanya Estes.
David was a retired school teacher, sign painter, photographer and preached in some local churches. He performed marriages. He graduated from Carlsbad High School.
He painted all large Carlsbad Cavern signs coming into Carlsbad. He also painted the Décor logo on the Décor Furniture delivery trucks.
Pallbearers will be Scott Avent, Jerry Lackey, Brian, Brent and Shane Stevenson.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your favorite Christian ministry or to beautify your own yard by planting a tree or plant in his honor. One of David's favorite Christian endeavors is the Tall el. Hamman Excavation Project. The excavators are digging what is strongly believed to be Sodom. Their address for donations is: Trinity Southwest University, 5600 Eubank NE, Suite 130, Albuquerque, NM 87111.
