Wayne Carlson, 89, of Watson Court, passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, in Carlsbad. Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at the Fort Bayard National Cemetery, 200 Camino De Paz, Fort Bayard, N.M. Mr. Irby Abernathy, former Apostolic minister, will officiate. Military honors will be performed by the USMC Honor Guard. Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. today (Oct. 3) at West Funeral Home. Condolences may be expressed at westfuneralhomellc.com.
Calvin Wayne Carlson was born Sept. 15, 1924, to Ernest B. and Novella (Holder) Carlson in Granger, Texas.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy Sept. 11, 1942, at the age of 17, in Austin, Texas. On July 3, 1943, he went aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Belleau Wood, serving in the South Pacific. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbons with six battle stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, American Area Victory Medal and the Presidential Unit Citation. On Oct. 29, 1944, the Belleau Wood was hit with a suicide dive bomber with 92 killed and 250 total casualties. The Belleau Wood then returned to San Francisco, Calif., for repairs.
Mr. Carlson was honorably discharged Jan. 20, 1946. He moved to Carlsbad in 1946, and married Mary Lou Tow Cordell Dec. 22, 1950. Between them they had four daughters.
He and his brother were owners of Carlson Paving. After selling his business in Carlsbad, Mr. Carlson moved to Kennett, Mo., in 1969. He moved to Silver City, N.M., in 1972, where he worked for the city. He retired from the city in 1987 and returned to Carlsbad.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 1558 and life member of the VFW Post No. 3277.
Mr. Carlson was preceded in death by his wife, May Lou on Dec. 13, 1986; brother, E.B. Carlson; and his parents.
Survivors include long-time companion, Lee Sadler of Carlsbad; dear friend, Christy Sadler; daughters: Connie Covington of Mandan, N.D., Sue Borkus of West Plains, Mo., Sherry Sloan and Debra Thompson of Carlsbad; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; as well as two nephews: Charles and Ernie Carlson.
