Ernestina "Ernie" Gonzales, 84, of Olive Street, passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2014, at home. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday (Feb.21) at San Jose Catholic Church, 1081 Iglesia Road in Anton Chico, N.M. Interment will follow at the Anton Chico Cemetery. Vigil/Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 20) at the West Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at West Funeral Home. Ernestina G. Gonzales, a resident of Carlsbad for 39 years, was born to Brijedo and Julianita (Sisneros) Griego on May 17, 1929, in La Loma, N.M., which she always considered her home.
Ernestina married her soul mate, Emiliano C. Gonzales, Jr., in 1960. On November 18, 1960, she was blessed with a daughter, Juanita, who became the center of her universe. Ernie devoted her life to making sure Juanita became a beautiful, respectable young lady. Her passion was her love for all her family and friends. Nothing was more important than family to her and all of her friends eventually became family. In her younger years, she was a Nanny to her nieces and nephews.
Ernie enjoyed dancing, quilting and cooking her famous papas and tortillas for everyone.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters, Veronica Garcia and Dulia Archibeque and brother, Luis Griego
Ernie is survived by her daughter, Joann Juanita Edwards of Carlsbad, brother, Benito Griego of La Loma, N.M., and sister, Socorro Sena of Albuquerque, N.M., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Robert Garcia, Daniel Carrillo, Luis Aguilar, Steven Griego, Joe Archibeque, Essel Baca and Grayson Paz.
Honorary Pallbearers are Macario Garcia, Kenny Langley, Eddie Gonzales, Scott Saunier, Joseph Quesada, Daniel Archibeque and Wilfred Hern, Jr.
