Tomas Silva Sr., 87, of Sage Street, passed away on Friday, June 13, 2014, at home. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, at San Jose Catholic Church. Father Valentine Jankowski, OFM Conv., will be the celebrant. Interment will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery (new section). Vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at San Jose Catholic Church. Tomas Silva Sr. was born on Dec. 29, 1926, in El Porvenir, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Emeterio Silva and Porfiria Vasquez. Tomas Silva Sr. and Elvira Palacios de Silva were married on Dec. 16, 1951 in San Ignacio, Chihuahua, Mexico. Tomas Silva Sr. and Elvira Palacios de Silva moved to Carlsbad, N.M., in 1978 where they made their permanent home.
Tomas Silva Sr. enjoyed nature, planting vegetable gardening, traveling, spending time with family, fixing things around the house, socializing, and being a provider to his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elvira Palacios de Silva; son, Miguel Silva; mother, Porfiria Vasquez de Silva; father, Emeterio Silva; two sisters, Nachita and Ignacia Silva; five brothers, Leopoldo, Jesus, Crecencio, Erminio, and Vicente Silva; granddaughter; Asia A. Sapien; and two son-in-laws, Jose Luis Rios, Sr. and Jerry Sapien.
He is survived by daughter Virginia S. Rios of Carlsbad, NM; daughter Emilia S. Maldonado and Jose (husband) of Whittier, CA; daughter Rosa S. Griego and Christopher (husband) of Roswell, NM; son Jose A. Silva and Patricia (wife) of Albuquerque, NM; daughter Elvira Silva and Jose Chavez (her life partner) of Whittier, Calif.; son Tomas Silva, Jr. of Kansas City, Kan.; son Domingo Silva of Waxahachie, Texas; daughter Angelita Silva of Albuquerque, NM; daughter Graciela Hernandez and Jerome (husband) of Carlsbad, NM; daughter Maria T. Silva and Jeffrey Weathers (fiancé) of Albuquerque, NM; daughter Silvia S. Sapien of Carlsbad, NM; 24 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Domingo Silva, Juan C. Hernandez, Antonio Serrano, José Luis Ríos, Tomas Silva, Jr., and Peter Silva. Honorary Pallbearers will be Miguel Silva, Dax Rios, Christopher Espinosa, Max Hernandez, Andrew Silva & Mateo Sapien.
