Cecil Brininstool Obituary
Cecil Brininstool, 86, passed away peacefully with family at his side at Carlsbad Medical Center on July 10, 2014. He was born to Charles Morman and Sally (McCormick) Brininstool on February 10, 1928, in Carlsbad. With the exception of his college years at UNM and UNLV (mathematics), he lived his entire life in Carlsbad.
During high school he started and managed many businesses including two newspaper deliveries and the Pecos River Beach concessions stand. Cecil graduated as valedictorian of the CHS Class of 1946. Returning from college, he married Margaret Elaine Seery in 1953 and began to raise their family. He continued his entrepreneur endeavors by building and running Carlsbad's first and only bowling alley (Bowlero Lanes, now Cactus Lanes) and a drive-in burger joint (The Arrowhead) built next to the then mid-high school.
He taught junior high, high school and college mathematics for many years and then was promoted to Math Coordinator overseeing all of the city's math testing and evaluation programs. He was Carlsbad school's assistant superintendent of personnel and finance where he created a salary formula for both teachers and administrators. After retirement, Cecil remained active in many financial and church endeavors, helping to support many local causes.
Cecil married Martha "Marty" (Ewing) Hawk on November 23, 1989, in Carlsbad.
He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Charles "Sonny" Brininstool, Elvie "Gussie" Horvath and Lila Marchione. Cecil is survived by his wife Marty and sons: Cecil "Allen" Brininstool and wife Debbie (Holley) of Flower Mound, Texas, Charles Morman Brininstool and wife Cynthia (Titus) Brininstool of Carlsbad; Michael Ross Brininstool and wife Stacey Curtis of La Jolla, Calif., and Phillip John Brininstool of Annandale, Va.; grandchildren: Andrew Allen and Allison Janell Brininstool, DeEtte Nicole (Brininstool) Sallee and husband JB, Ryan Andrew and Russell Scott Brininstool, Ian Ward Brininstool, Taylor Rice and Stephanie Jo Brininstool; great-grandchildren: Brinkley and Haven Sallee; step-children and grandchildren: Roberta "Bobbi" Jo Hawk, spouse Vincent Raye of Billings, MT, Gerald Parker "GP" Hawk, Jr, spouse Melanie (Bransom) Hawk and children: Hayden Parker Hawk, Alexandra Ann "Alex Ann" Hawk of Prairieville, LA. ; Clayton "Clay" Ewing Hawk of Portales, NM, Wesley "Wes" Spencer Hawk, spouse Shannon (Keaton) Hawk and children: Kevin Charles Hawk, Morgan Elizabeth Hawk of York, PA; and Nathan Franklin Hawk, spouse Jenny (Rolley) Hawk of Baton Rouge, LA; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services for Cecil Brininstool will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 14, 2014, at First United Methodist Church, 207 N. Halagueno St., with Rev. Dan Boyd officiating. Burial will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday (July 13) at West Funeral Home, 401 N. Guadalupe St.
