Donald Boyd, 86, of South Walnut Street, passed away Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at home. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, at the West Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Tarvin of Happy Valley Baptist Church officiating. Masonic Rites will be performed by Eddy Lodge No. 21 AF&AM. Burial will follow in the new section of Carlsbad Cemetery with military honors being performed by the Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today (Oct. 30) at West Funeral Home. Lodge of Sorrow will convene at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Eddy Lodge No. 21, 513 N. Canyon St. Services have been entrusted to West Funeral Home. Condolences may be expressed at westfuneralhomellc.com
Don Boyd was born April 29, 1926, in Brownwood, Texas, to Donnie Smith. Don joined the Navy in 1944, and served on the USS Halena and answered the call to duty once again in 1950 during the Korean Conflict. He met Sallie Ann Tomlinson in Corpus Christie, Texas, in 1952 and they were married that same year. He moved the family to Carlsbad in 1965, where he enjoyed a career as a journeyman electrician working in the potash mines and several major construction projects, retiring in 1988. Don was very active in the VFW Post No. 8703 where he served in various positions and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 13. He was also a Master Mason with Lodge No. 21.
He is survived by his wife, Sallie Ann Boyd of Carlsbad; three children: son, John Boyd and wife ,Patti of Wamego, Kan.; and daughters: Susan Boyd and Denise and husband, Randy Greer, all of Carlsbad; sister, Margaret Coley of Roswell, N.M.; brothers: Larry Smith and wife, Sandy of Silver City, N.M., David Smith and wife, Bertha of Mimbres, N.M., and Tom Smith of Albuquerque; grandchildren: Tammy Ewing, Jeremy Boyd, Eric Boyd, Justin Wagner, Trey Wagner, Kasey Kessler and Katie Wheeler; six great-grandchildren: Tyler Dale, Bladin, Brodie, Mason, Jordan and McKenzie; and several nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins.
