Matthew Depew Obituary

Matthew Craig Depew, 30, was born Nov. 23, 1982, to Wayne Depew and Suzanne Fox in Colorado. Matt left us all too early on Saturday, June 15, 2013, while working on power lines to restore power and was electrocuted. Matt passed away with family and friends by his side.
Matthew grew up in Colorado and was an outstanding football player and wrestler with many awards and medals. He was a Columbine survivor and hero in the high school tragedy in 1999, and saved 17 lives during the Columbine shooting, where he was later awarded with a Medal of Honor.
He later graduated from Brighton High School in 2001. Matt worked in Colorado for Northern Pipeline as a line foreman and at Quality Contracting as a journeyman and line foreman, where he made many lifelong friends who helped build his wonderful character, personality and sense of humor.
Matt moved here last June from Ft. Lupton, Colo., to brighten up every life he encountered while here. He touched every heart with his big smile, laugh, high spirits, huge heart and amazing abilities. He worked as a lineman for Xcel Energy since July 2012. He was confident, strong and unafraid to work hard, wanting to improve himself and abilities. He was eager to help in all times of need.
Matt also volunteered for Superstorm Sandy in Long Island this past November, driving more than 2,000 miles, staying 10 days helping to restore power to people in need. He didn't only restore power to those in need, but restored life, happiness, Faith, strength, comfort and Love for anyone who he was around during his short time on earth. Matt was genuinely an amazing man, who many admired, looked up to and were inspired by. When he loved, he loved with ALL his heart. He changed all the lives of those who were blessed to know him and will be missed enormously.
Matt was preceded in death by his grandfather, Beauford Depew. He is survived by his parents; his grandmother, Lily Depew; fiancee, Shaelynn Maxey; and several friends. He was TRULY a "Gift from God" put here to change the lives of everyone he met and that's exactly what he did … Matt will be forever a part of our hearts and souls.

Whenever I was with you, we had fun. You had a way of brightening a day and making people smile even when they didn't want to. I will always remember you and miss you. You will forever be in my heart.
