Douglas C. Lynn Sr. was born to Walter W. and Mabel (Cameron) Lynn on Aug. 7, 1927, in Henrietta, Okla., where he attended school and became a basketball standout. He was recruited by the legendary Bruce Drake at Oklahoma University where, his senior year, he received All-American honors for the Sooners. The 6-foot, 8-inch, 265-pound Sooner was well known for his aggressiveness and tenacity on the floor.
His college career was briefly interrupted by the World War II draft, where he served his country for two years playing basketball for the Army Air Corps and working as a Drill Instructor. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant before an honorable discharge and return to his beloved OU. He was drafted to play in the fledgling professional league by Al of Milwaukee. He found out that he could make more money in the US Industrial league and moved to the Artesia REA team, where he met his wife of 61 years, Billie Hemler.
He settled down to farming in the Carlsbad area, where he and Billie had three children. In 1964, he moved his family to Alpine, Texas, to continue his education at Sul Ross State University. Doug loved Alpine so much that he settled his family there, working as a coach and school teacher for 12 years. He stated repeatedly that his fondest memories and the greatest accomplishments of his professional life were those in the classroom teaching kids.
He and Billie later moved back to the family farm in Carlsbad, where he taught high school and later served as the Carlsbad High School principal for nearly a decade. During his leadership at CHS, the school received national recognition by the National Education Association.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandy Lynn; and his brother, Walter Lynn. His survivors are: wife, Billie H. Lynn; daughter, Janey Lynn; son, Douglas C. Lynn Jr. and his wife, Anissa A. Lynn; and seven grandchildren: Trey Lynn, Shea O'Reilly, Cameron Lynn, Erin Lynn, Dylan Lynn, Baylee Lynn and Carrie Lynn. He also has three great-grandchildren: Adisyn Sorenson, Bostyn Lynn and Kylar Lynn.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Carlsbad Foundation (114 S. Canyon St., Carlsbad, NM 88220) Sandy Lynn Memorial scholarship.
