Maria Rodriguez Corona, 78, of Presidio Street, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec.14, at San Jose Catholic Church with Father Valentine Jankowski OFM Conv., officiating. Interment will follow at Santa Catarina Cemetery. Vigil will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec.13, at West Funeral Home. Visitation will be 1-8 p.m Friday at West Funeral Home. Maria was born on Oct. 22, 1935, in Pyote, Texas, to Preciliano Corona and Cruz Rodriguez Corona. Maria was raised and educated in Carlsbad; she graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1957. She worked at Carlsbad Medical Center for 25 years until she retired to take care of her mother. During her employment with Carlsbad Medical Center she received the Humanitarian Award.
Maria always put others first before herself. She helped her parents raise her nieces, Dora Ogas and Betty Sanchez and nephew Greg Corona Jr., whom she considered her children.
Maria is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Gregorio Corona Sr., and Jose "Pepe" Corona.
She is survived by her brothers: Lupe Corona & wife Dominga and Johnny Corona & wife Flora; sister Bessie Quintela & husband Gilbert Sr.; nieces she raised: Dora Ogas and Betty Sanchez and nephew she raised: Greg Corona Jr., as well as numerous additional nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
Pallbearers will be Dora Ogas, Brenda Corona, Jose Corona, Gilbert Quintela Jr., Michael Corona & Gregorio Corona III. Honorary pallbearers are all her nieces and nephews.
Maria will always be in the hearts of those who loved her.
