Ernest John Halen, 84, Cynthiana, Ky., died in his home on Friday, May 30, 2014 due to complications with diabetes.
He was born on Nov. 25, 1929, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Rafael and Frances Halen. He served two terms in the Korean War
in the Army as a military policeman and worked for the Miami Herald Leader during the first pioneer studies in the computer field. He married Sarah Jean Loftus Halen and had three children and later transferred to the Lexington Herald-Leader where he was recruited by Knight Ridder Corp. to design, implement and train personnel to operate computer systems and later retired. That department would now be considered the IT department.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Jean Halen.
Survivors include: his brother, Rudy Halen, Lake Mary, Fla.; his three children, Sandra Stump, Cynthiana, Ky., Michael (Lucinda) Halen, Sadieville, Ky., and Bonnie White, Cynthiana, Ky.; three grandchildren, Brian (Tracye) Halen, Georgetown, Ky., Bradley Stump, Cynthiana, and Kymberlie (Brian) Price, Cynthiana; and nine great-grandchildren, Johnathan Halen, Brandon Halen, Cathy Chasteen, Tevin Gilkey, Payton Price, Reighley Halen, Ayden Jones, Christopher Stump and Sarah Stump; and two special friends, Jessica White and Audrey Fryman.
The family held a private memorial service. Morgan Family Funeral, Versailles, Ky., was in charge of arrangements.
